Kia ora Bradford Whānau,

I hope you have all had an enjoyable weekend with some outdoor activities on Sunday in the glorious weather!  Last week I shared with you that we had recently begun planning to utilise our wonderful outdoor environment for our lessons more in 2022.  It is no surprise really that recent studies illustrate that outdoor environments have a very beneficial effect on child mental health in education.  The outdoors provides stress relief, removes children from classroom norms and increases serotonin levels.  At Bradford, opportunities to promote wellbeing is always at the forefront of our minds when tailoring programmes for our tamariki.  Often, with careful  consideration we can authentically weave these through other curriculum areas such as the case below.
 
An important aspect of our NZ Curriculum delivery is education for sustainability. 

Education for sustainability includes learning about:

  • the environment – water, land, ecosystems, energy, waste, urban living and transportation
  • the interactions between the natural environment and human activities, and the consequences of these
  • the choices and actions we can take to prevent, reduce, or change harmful activities to the environment.

Central to this learning is the exploration of attitudes, values, and behaviours with respect to the environment - both our own and those of others.

Tiakina te taiao, tiakina te iwi e - If you look after the environment, the environment will look after you. 

Our hope for sustainability within and beyond our Bradford School environment is to teach our tamariki to become kaitiaki of our land.  At our Teacher Only Day, we detailed how we might bring science inquiries to life for our children with meaningful connections between learning areas, key competencies, values and culture. 

In conjunction with our science foci we plan to embrace kaitiakitanga (guardianship) by growing our understanding of matauranga Māori (a broad term that translates as Māori knowledge) and connections to the land that we wish to protect and preserve.  Our tamariki will also be partaking in authentic hands on learning designed to further connect them with nature such as designing and building compost bins to reduce the food waste from our lunches.  We have purchased appropriately sized woodworking tools for the children's projects and welcome any caregivers with skills and interest in matauranga Māori, gardening, woodworking etc to please let us know  if you'd like to volunteer some time to support us next year.

 2021 Book Fair
15th – 19th November

Make sure you come and check out our annual Book fair next week held in the school foyer.  Great for gifts and every book you buy contributes to more books in  the Bradford School Library!
 
The book fair will be open every day from 15th – 19th November between the hours of 8.30am – 8.55am and 3.00pm – 3.30pm.
 
Keep an eye out for a flyer coming out tomorrow with alternative ways to buy books.
 
We will be holding a Fish and Chip night on Wednesday 17th November from 5.30 – 6.30pm.  You are invited to bring along your dinner and have a look at the books while the teachers entertain the kids with some stories from the book fair.
 
We do ask that you follow Level 2 guidelines as follows:
 
  • Wear a mask
  • Sign in using the Covid app and write your name on the tracing sheet.
  • Hand sanitise on entry
  • Keep a 2m distance between your bubble and others where possible.  This may be difficult in the small space of the foyer so we may ask the families stagger their entry  – please follow teacher instructions.
Whilst we hope it will never happen to us, it is really important to be prepared for any civil emergency. Please do take the time at home to discuss / review your plans with your whānau should disaster strike.  Below you will find the second challenge in a weekly showcased series that you might like to consider undertaking as a family.

Bradfords Board of Trustees is looking for whānau of our tamariki who are interested in being a part of our School Board.

This is a great way to be involved in the running of the school and have a greater understanding of the work that goes on behind the white board.

Our budding G & T Scientists visited  the planetarium this past week, but of course it was too dark to take a photo there. The tamariki were learning about forces; in Discovery World they were looking for examples such as gravity,  motion, air currents and magnetism.  Here are a few of the team in action.

GREAT NEWS! 

Bradford School's Enrolment Zone officially ceased at the end of last term.  What this means is that we can return to accepting student's from beyond the Bradford boundary that may like to join our special place. In the past, it has been really heartbreaking having to turn away prospective families who were not in Zone. 

If you know of families who are interested in attending Bradford School we encourage you to please let them know we are now accepting students across all year levels for 2022.  Equally if you have a younger child who you are intending to enrol, we ask that you please let Sonja know so we can put them on our list.  This forward planning assists greatly in our staffing and classroom configurations to ensure we deliver the best adult to student ratios we can for our tamariki.  
DYSLEXIA PARENT INFORMATION EVENING 
 
Whānau are warmly invited to our Dyslexia Parent Information Evening on Wednesday 24th November at 6:45pm.  Staff will be sharing what dyslexia is (and isn't), how it may affect children, how and when we tend to identify it, strengths of the dyslexic mind and supports available both at school and in the home.  We would appreciate it if you could please let your child's teacher know if you are intending to attend. There is also a $50 Grocery voucher spot prize available on the night for one lucky attendee.
