The goal of this training is to empower and equip each participant with the confidence and ability to lead their own kirtan. The immersive journey is designed to give you fundamental skills, tools and knowledge that will take you deeper into your kirtan experience. Over the course of a full week, you will learn how to play instruments, lead kirtan on your own, and develop a much more personal relationship to the art of kirtan itself by diving into the deeper layers of kirtan as a spiritual practice. Elements of the training will include exploring the history and meaning of kirtan, how to develop the devotional qualities that can enhance your kirtan offerings, learning rhythm, and how to play harmonium and kartals (hand cymbals). No previous kirtan experience or musical ability is necessary
The week will begin with exploring the foundations of kirtan as we learn common chords, simple melodies, and begin to get comfortable with singing. We will also explore other elements that play a huge part in the offering of kirtan such as the history and culture of kirtan and how to develop the devotional qualities that can enhance your kirtan experience.
As the training progresses we will dive deeper into more complex melodies and fingerings on the harmonium. We will also explore the element of rhythm as we learn how to play the kartals (hand cymbals) at various speeds. We will learn a large range of different melodies and mantras that can fit varying moods and circumstances. Pranayama and vocal exercises will help us understand breath and how to use our voice.
With daily kirtans and extensive time to play and practice together, you will gain exposure to the various ways that people approach and perform kirtan, including musical styles, tempos, and moods.
Sessions will be conducted amidst the beautiful backdrop of our private retreat center along the Pacific coast of Mexico. Along with kirtan, our week will include daily asana classes, dharma talks, group meditation and yoga nidra sessions and plenty of time on the beach and with the ocean.
