Dear CENMAC Community,

This month we hope you find the many links and resources the team have included for the UK Disability in History focus useful. You may wish to share with colleagues and spark some conversations on ways in which we can continue to remove barriers and create diverse and inclusive environments.

A big thank you to our student ambassadors Kamal and Khamani who did an excellent job sharing their knowledge and experiences with visitors to the TES SEN show last month. Also, to Abdi who reminded us all how important these events are to raise the profile and ability of everyone. As used by Abdi #GetSeen

Disability History Month begins on the 18 November, with a joint focus on ‘Relationships and Sex’ and ‘Hidden Impairments’.

Like other history months or awareness days in the UK this is a particular time for focusing on issues and generating awareness and discussion. And like other awareness days and months, many believe that the topics covered shouldn’t be limited to just one day, week or month of the year.

The National Education Union has put together some useful resources for a school assembly and an activity suitable for Key Stage 2.

Social Model of Disability

BSL (British Sign Language) version of the Social Model of Disability, by Inclusion London

The Social Model of Disability, also sometimes known as a ‘barriers-approach’ is something that CENMAC uses when thinking about the children and young people that we have contact with. This model of looking at disability is a shift from traditional ways of thinking when society viewed differences through a medical or charitable lens. The Medical Model of Disability saw disability as an individual, medical problem that needed to be prevented or cured and/or as an issue that viewed disabled people with pity and needing charity.

Whereas the Medical Model places the onus on the person and sees their disability as the problem, the Social Model states that people with impairments or diversities are ‘disabled’ by the barriers that they face in society. CENMAC is of the view that the barriers stopping individuals from reaching their potential can be overcome, and we work with children and young people to address these barriers using the SETT framework.
