Dear Readers,
International climate conference COP26 begins in Glasgow (Scotland) UK. World is discussing to limit temperature rise by 1.5 degree Celsius. There is a disagreement over timeline as developed economies avoiding the question of equity which compromise their climate action to reduce greenhouse gases. Our Foundation is actively participating in this conference. We have launched online dashboard, Climate Equity Monitor( https://climateequitymonitor.in) on the eve of the conference in collaboration with the Natural Sciences and Engineering Department at the National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) Bengaluru to track equity in climate action.
The Hon’ble Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Bhupender Yadav welcomed the scientific initiative “Climate Equity Monitor” on global climate policy.
Experts have long been felt the need of such platform. Such trackers are either based in the Global North (developed economies) or funded by them, and they do not adequately address the crucial aspects of equity and differentiation. The website is the Global South’s independent climate tracker.
October month proved to be quite happening. We entered into a strategic partnership on research and programmes around agriculture and food security, nutrition, climate change adaptation, community resilience building, and sustainable livelihoods in India with The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).
We organised nutrition garden visit of Mr. Bishow Parajuli, Representative and Country Director – India, Parajuli , at Tiruvallur on the occasion of World Food Day. We successfully ran social media campaign on World Food Day with though provoking messages. Our foundation’s scientists were part of 75th year of India’s Independence campaign through taking science to society.
Odisha Government in collaboration with the MSSRF has come up with a customised mobile application (FFMA) which would alert fishermen about the no-fishing zones to conserve endangered Olive Ridley sea turtles.
There has been change of guard in our Foundation. Dr. K S Murali, Executive Director, moved on from the foundation. We have now new Executive Director, Dr G N Hariharan (In-charge). Dr Hariharan has been serving the foundation from more than 25 years.
Another update, we have changed our periodicity of Newsletter from fortnight to monthly.
There are many more to read in this issue Newsletter.
