Lia van Gemert, emeritus professor Historical Dutch Literature since1 December 2020, will give the valedictory lecture 'Herscheppen' on 18 November in the Aula. Due to COVID restrictions, her valedictory speech had to be postponed. Read more

On December 9, 2021, Wyger Velema will deliver his valedictory lecture as Jan Romein Professor in the Department of History at the University of Amsterdam. The title of his lecture is: ‘Grensoverschrijdend gedrag. De Nederlandse Grand Tour naar Italië tijdens de Verlichting’. Read more

Finishing Fellowships were awarded to Avraham Roos to finish the project "Why is This Translation Different from All Other Translations?" and to Chaim Burman for the project "Truth-telling theory in rabbinic discourse and contemporary Jewish contexts".

Every year the Faculty of Humanities offers a number of Finishing Fellowships to PhD candidates who have succeeded in writing an advanced draft of their thesis without the support of structural funding. The fellowships aim to enable self-funded PhD candidates to concentrate exclusively on the completion of their thesis in their last year. Starting in 2016, the Faculty has awarded 42 Finishing Fellowships, resulting in 31 new doctors.

In Emily Hemelrijk's new book "Verborgen levens, publieke figuren: Romeinse vrouwen buiten Rome" shows us the public roles of women in the Roman era.

Wie aan Romeinse vrouwen denkt, denkt aan Vestaalse maagden, trouwe echtgenotes, gevierde minnaressen of machtsbeluste keizerinnen: de vrouwen van Rome uit de antieke literatuur. Gezien door de ogen van mannen uit de elite. Maar hoe zat het met de talloze inwoonsters van andere Romeinse steden? Welke rol speelden zij in het stedelijk leven van Italië en de provincies van het uitgestrekte Romeinse rijk? Emily Hemelrijk neemt de lezer mee in een zoektocht naar de openbare functies die Romeinse vrouwen bekleedden. Zo ontstaat een heel ander beeld van Romeinse vrouwen. Read more

The Research School for Medieval Studies will reconvene its annual medieval studies day on Friday 17 December 10:00-17:00, a day on which all members of the research school have the opportunity to meet each other in an informal setting, to exchange ideas, and to catch up with each other. This day will be organized at the University of Amsterdam, Oudemanhuispoort.

We invite proposals for other contributions. Papers will be 20 minutes, followed by time for discussion; contributions can be delivered in Dutch or English. Proposals of 150 words max. can be submitted by email to the organizing committee, per address Prof. Dr. Hugo van der Velden, h.t.vandervelden@uva.nl. Proposals can be submitted until November 18. In the autumn of 2020, the Van Gogh Museum, in collaboration with ESNA and the University of Amsterdam, organized a series of roundtable discussions that from various angles sought to address the question of “diversifying” the canon of nineteenth-century art and making art-historical practice more “inclusive.” The aim of these meetings, followed up in January 2021 by the annual ESNA Winter Seminar on the same topic, was to formulate concrete research strands, which, rather than simply broadening the nineteenth-century canon, would substantially change it. Ideally, these would give direction to university teaching, exhibitions, and collection building over the next five years. Read more

Deze maand verschijnt De zeventiende eeuw: een handboek over een beroemd en berucht tijdperk uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis, geschreven door een team van internationale experts. Ter gelegenheid van de boekpresentatie gaan de redacteurs in debat over de manier waarop ons beeld van deze ‘gouden eeuw’ de laatste decennia is veranderd en wat die periode ons vandaag de dag nog te zeggen heeft. Schrijver en UvA-student Dan Afrifa draagt een column voor.

De avond vindt plaats in de Aula van de UvA aan het Singel en wordt georganiseerd door Spui25, i.s.m. de Faculteit Geesteswetenschappen UvA en Leiden University Press. Read more

The Johan Huizinga Fund/Rijksmuseum Fund offers early career scholars the opportunity to conduct historical research into objects in the Rijksmuseum collection. Candidates are invited to submit a research proposal that draws on these objects as subject material and as sources of historical information. The Johan Huizinga Fellowship is primarily intended for candidates whose focus is on the historical role and symbolic meaning of objects, on material culture and/or the societal context in which these artifacts were used.

The deadline for applications is 10 January 2022. The newly selected fellows will start in September 2022. Read more

The Haifa Center for Mediterranean History (HCMH) invites international PhD students to conduct research on a project relating to the history of the Mediterranean, during one or two semesters.

HCMH, which began its work in 2016, promotes the historical study of the pre-modern Mediterranean at the University of Haifa, and aims to connect it to the vibrant international networks of Mediterranean research. Proposed PhD projects should engage meaningfully with a Mediterranean theme and show relevance to the current historiographical discourse. Read more

In 2022, the planning for the next Veni rounds in NWO Talent Programme will be fully aligned, just as it was prior to the changes that took place last year as a result of the coronavirus crisis and hack at NWO. The decision about the 2021 Veni SSH is planned for April next year, and NWO has considered the best starting dates for 2022 by taking into account the desire not to create an overlap of rounds or introduce new changes to the current evaluation procedures.

The new Veni-planning for all domains is as follows: Deadline for the (mandatory) preproposal is Tuesday 6 September 2022; Deadline for full proposals is Tuesday 24 January 2023; The decision about the Veni proposals for the 2022 round will take place in June 2023.

The call for the 2022 ERC Starting Grant is now open. Researchers of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD (Extensions are possible under certain circumstances), a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal. Starting Grants may be awarded up to € 1.5 million for a period of 5 years. Applications for an ERC grant must be submitted by a single Principal Investigator (PI) in conjunction with and on behalf of their Host Institution, called the applicant legal entity. The deadline for applications is 13 January 2022.
