Northern Petrochemical selects KBR and Johnson Matthey for Alberta facility
Northern Petrochemical Corporation enlisted KBR to provide license and basic engineering design for their ammonia-methanol co-production facility in Alberta, Canada. The ammonia-methanol co-production technology has been jointly developed by KBR and Johnson Matthey and will utilize the latest carbon capture and storage technologies to achieve a carbon-neutral process.
 
Dow plans to expand and make their petrochemical plant in Alberta net-zero
Dow Chemical Co. plans to expand their Alberta petrochemical plant to triple its size as well as covert the natural-gas-to-plastics complex to a net-zero carbon emissions plant. The expansion will include a new 1.8 million tons per year (tpy) ethane cracker at its Fort Saskatchewan complex and triple the ethylene and polyethylene capacities. The company will also retrofit the complex to capture the facility’s gases and pump them into an existing captured carbon pipeline, making it a net-zero carbon emissions facility. The overall investment is expected to amount to ~$6 to $10 billion.
 
Milliken acquires Encapsys to expand specialty chemicals portfolio
Milliken & Company has completed the acquisition of Encapsys. Encapsys is a Wisconsin-based specialty chemicals company that is a leader in microencapsulation technologies. Microencapsulation has applications across industries and helps companies achieve more sustainable products by advancing responsible consumption and efficient delivery of active materials.

Bazan Group signs a deal with UBQ Materials to incorporate recycled materials
Bazan’s wholly-owned subsidiary, Carmel Olefins (CAOL), is the only manufacturer of petrochemicals for raw materials for the plastics industry in Israel. UBQ Materials produces climate-positive, cost-competitive, and fully recyclable thermoplastics from unsorted landfill-destined municipal waste. UBQ will supply Bazan from their manufacturing facility in Tze’elim, Israel, with subsequent supply of tens of thousands annual tons from the company’s Netherlands facility to be operational by Q4 2022. Bazan will use the new resin to make carbon-reduced, recyclable specialty polypropylene.
 
Dow partners with Gunvor Group for pyrolysis oil feedstocks purification
Dow has finalized an agreement with Gunvor Petroleum Rotterdam, a wholly owned subsidiary of Gunvor Group to purify plastic waste pyrolysis oil. Gunvor is an experienced processor of crude oils and brings expertise that can further improve the quality of pyrolysis oil feedstock. Thus, Gunvor will supply cracker-ready feedstock to Dow in Europe beginning in 2021.

Pyrum starts expansion of its pyrolysis plant in Germany
Pyrum Innovations has begun expansion of the production capacity of its pyrolysis plant at the company’s headquarters in Dillingen/Saar. The plant currently consists of one production line that produces pyrolysis oil-recovered carbon black, and pyrolysis gas from 7,000 tpy of end-of-life tires. The addition of two more lines as a part of the expansion will triple processing capacity to approximately 20,000 tpy of end-of-life tires.
 
Investment management company Sakhumnotho acquires 26% stake in Refinex
South Africa-based investment management company, Sakhumnotho, has acquired a 26% stake in the privately owned petrochemicals company, Refinex and bulk liquid storage company, South African Tank Terminals (SATT). Refinex is a bulk supplier of fuel oils into the energy market and in partnership with SATT, they ensure supply of products through processing, manufacturing, and blending of petrochemicals, transportation, and storage to customers ranging from private, as well as public sectors.

ExxonMobil announces FID for mega China petrochemicals project
ExxonMobil made a final investment decision (FID) to build a multi-billion dollar petrochemical complex in south China’s Guangdong province. The Dayawan plant will produce performance polymers used in packaging, automotive, agriculture, and consumer products for hygiene and personal care. It includes a 1.6 million tpy flexible steam cracker, three performance polyethylene lines, and two differentiated performance polypropylene lines. Although the firm has not disclosed the value of the investment, it is speculated to be around $10 billion as reported by China’s state new agency Xinhua.
 
Biesterfield decides to acquire GME Chemicals to expand market in Asia
Biesterfield is a Germany-based family-owned distributor of plastics and chemicals with subsidiaries in more than 30 countries globally. The company recently decided to acquire Singapore-based GME Chemicals that is active in the markets for performance and industrial chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, and elastomers and specialty polymers. A joint venture has been established by Biesterfield acquiring a majority stake in GME and a complete takeover will take place in the next five years.
 
BASF Petronas Chemicals to expand 2-EHA production capacity in Malaysia
BASF Petronas Chemicals, a joint venture between BASF and Petronas Chemicals Group are planning to expand the production capacity of 2-ethylhexanoic acid (2-EHA) from 30,000 to 60,000 tpy by 2024. 2-EHA is used in the production of synthetic lubricants and oil additives and is also used in functional fluids such as automotive coolants, plasticizers, stabilizers, catalysts, metal salts for paint dryers, and others.
