2022 Budget Meeting

A Town Hall meeting to review the draft of the 2022 Budget will be held on November 21, 2021 immediately following our Sunday service.
A copy of the draft budget will be emailed to you and posted on the UUSMV website prior to the Town Hall.
Pledges comprise 80% of UUSMV’s income.  Those funds are needed to pay Rev Rob, Ann, Andy, and other people who help support the functioning of UUSMV.  Pledges enable us to make an annual donation to UUA and to pay for the insurance for the Chapel, utilities, printing, postage, pamphlets and books, etc.
If you have not already done so, please finishing paying your 2021 pledge and send in your pledge for 2022.  The Finance Committee needs to know the amount of pledge income we can expect in order to prepare the budget.  You know how it goes – it’s difficult to decide whether you’ll be able to afford something without knowing if you’ll have the money to pay for it.
We hope to see you there!

A Year of Discovery and Rediscovery
Dear Friends,
Earlier this week a friend and I took a long walk in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It was a beautiful autumn day, and the sun’s golden light cut sharp angles through stands of Red Oak and Eastern Hemlock. Emerging from the forest, we found ourselves on a high craggy peak from which we looked out over a valley carpeted in autumn colors: green, gold, orange and red.

Fall always gets me thinking about the transience of things; the Earth’s changing seasons recalling the cycles of own lives. Maybe that’s why we celebrate holidays such as All Souls Day and Día de los Muertos in the fall. These sacred days remind us of the impermanence of our lives even as they bear witness to the persistence of our love for one another beyond the grave.

I often find myself returning this time of year to a beautiful poem written by the Harlem Renaissance poet Esther Popel. It’s called “October Prayer.”

October Prayer
Change me, oh God,
Into a tree in autumn
And let my dying
Be a blaze of glory!

Drape me in a
Crimson, leafy gown,
And deck my soul
In dancing flakes of gold!

And then when Death
Comes by, and with his hands
Strips off my rustling garment
Let me stand

Before him, proud and naked,
Unashamed, uncaring,
All the strength in me revealed
Against the sky!

Oh, God
Make me an autumn tree
If I must die!

Amen.
Love, ROB
