Welcome to the final Zealandia Education E-News for 2021. In this edition, the end-of term version (after waiting as long as we could in order to give you the most up-to-date information) we take a peek into 2022.

As we reach the end of 2021 though, the Learning team would like to wish you a safe, happy and relaxing festive break. Thank you for your ongoing support of Zealandia and the Learning programme. We look forward to seeing you in 2022.
The Learning team will be taking a break between December 23 through until January 12, 2022. Feel free to get in touch during this time and we will respond as soon as we can after January 12.

You can get in touch with us via email or phone (04) 920 9204.

Te Māra a Tāne Learning Team
We are full steam ahead for 2022!

For 2022 we are full steam ahead with a range of opportunities for learning with Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne.

Throughout the year you can visit us here at the sanctuary or we can visit you at your place. From ECE through to year 13 we have something on offer for all learners. Whether visiting for a day session, booking for an after hours experience, or even staying overnight with a Sanctuary Sleepover we have something for all.

Costs vary depending on session from $7.50/student for a typical day session through to $65.00/student for a Sanctuary Sleepover that includes both night and dawn walks. Sanctuary sessions can range in length from 45 minutes up to 5 hours with outreach sessions tailored to your design. If you are a decile 1-6 school from Wellington you can apply to participate in the Nature at Your Place programme and the costs are covered for you (T&C's apply). For full details of the programme check out www.visitzealandia.com/Education

Bookings are available online
Vaccine Passes

From 3 December, 2021 all visitors, including education groups, to Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne have been required to confirm their COVID-19 Vaccination status prior to entering the Visitor Centre unless individuals or members of the group are aged under 12-years and 3-months.

In order to streamline confirmation of the vaccination status of your education group, we will contact you via email prior to your visit, asking you to confirm via return email, that all members of your group, over the age of 12 years and 3-months, are vaccinated. If you are able to confirm via return email your group will not be required to show vaccination passes upon entry.

If, for some reason you are unable to confirm via email, we will ask you to verbally confirm upon arrival at Zealandia that all members of your group, over the age of 12 years and 3-months, are vaccinated. If you are able to verbally confirm this your group will not be required to show vaccination passes upon entry.

If you are unable to confirm via email or verbally, all members of your group will be required to present their vaccination passes upon entry to the Visitor Centre if they are aged over 12-years and 3-months.
COVID-19 information - RAMS forms

Thank you to everyone that has been in touch recently asking for information around the process and protocols for education visits at Zealandia since the introduction of the COVID Protection Framework.

To date, we have been replying individually to questions and queries but over the last few weeks we have been compiling a list of FAQ's relating to the COVID measures that are in place at Zealandia.

For those Kura Kaupapa Māori, schools, ECE, and Te Kōhanga Reo who make a booking for their visit from February 2022, this FAQ will be attached to your online booking confirmation as a PDF. If you have made your booking already, you will receive this information early in the new year.

This can be your first port of call in providing relevant information to assist in compiling any health and safety documentation for your visit alongside our RAMS form. If you cannot find the information you are looking for within these documents please don't hesitate to get in touch

See our website for more information.
Learning at night with Te Māra a Tāne

Education groups are able to experience Zealandia after dark between March and the end of November each year.

School Night Walks let your students explore the sanctuary at night. Led by expert Education rangers students get to let their senses come alive to spot kiwi, tuatara, tuna and more and see the sanctuary in a whole new light.
Sleepovers at Zealandia let young people experience the sanctuary as day turns to night and then back into the dawn. Participants get to take part in workshops, experience a night walk, and then sleepover in the Zealandia exhibition. After a yummy breakfast the next morning they then experience a dawn chorus like no other!

Our after dark experiences book out very quickly and there is limited availability. Please get in touch as soon as possible to secure your preferred date.

Connecting teens with nature

If you think teenagers only care about their cellphones, social media and learning TikTok dances we have a special group of young people who will prove you wrong.

Throughout this year, the Rāngai Rangatahi/Youth Collective came together to grow their passion for te taiao, te ao Māori and Zealandia. Led by Zealandia Community Engagement Ranger Cat Ayres, they visited reserves and parks all over the region to hear about different conservation projects, as well collaborated on ideas to inspire other young people to connect to nature.

They weeded on Waimapihi/Polhill, visited Matiu/Somes Island, scoped out a proposed sanctuary site in Wainuiomata, spoke at a youth conference, planned a youth takeover event, cleaned up a local beach, went on night walks through Zealandia and snorkelled in a marine reserve.

"Throughout all of our sessions, we always leave with a renewed sense of respect and awe of Papatūānuku and te taiao.” - Rāngai Rangatahi member.

Applications to take part in the 2022 programme open in term 2. This opportunity is open to young people aged 14-18 based in the Wellington region
