5 Wishes booklet

Dear People of Hope,

This All Saints Sunday in worship, I shared a bit of the story of my parents, their lives, and their deaths.  As some of you know, both my parents died in their 60s, within the past few years.  They gave me and my sister many gifts in life - the gift of a sibling, the gift of education, the gift of faith and relationships at church.  One of the last gifts my parents gave us was the gift of clear instructions for their end-of-life wishes.

My parents had talked with each other about what kind of care they would and wouldn't want.  They then shared this with me and my sister.  They had a binder of legal and financial paperwork in their file cabinet that my sister and I could find when we needed it.  While their deaths still brought tremendous grief, there was some comfort in knowing what they wanted and in being empowered and authorized to act on their behalf.

Since then, Silas and I have completed our end-of-life paperwork as well.  We have a binder in our file cabinet, though we hope it is decades before anyone needs to use it on our behalf.

Preparing for end of life is a gift each of us can give our family and friends.  It can be hard to think about and talk about.  And it can be difficult to know where to begin and what to do.  Some people work with a lawyer, some people do their own research on the internet.  Some people use a booklet called "Five Wishes."

The Five Wishes booklet guides people in thinking through what they want at the end of their lives.  It does not address financial issues.  But it does address, and provide legally binding documentation for health care preferences.  Thinking through and completing this paperwork can be a generous, loving, and faithful act.

If you are interested in your own copy of 5 Wishes, for yourself or someone you know, contact me or Beth in the office.  We're happy to mail you a booklet.  If it is easier for you, you may also find it online here: https://fivewishes.org/shop/order/product/five-wishes-advance-directive.  If you simply want to talk through some of the options and how you might make these consequential decisions, feel free to reach out to me for conversation.

Peace of Christ,
  Pastor Julie
