Message from Milena, New Chapter Website, Let's Talk Period, Starting Your Period Webinar Hemophilia Ontario, Heavy Menstrual Bleeding, Iron Deficiency Management, Lucky Iron Fish

Message from Milena Pirnat, Chapter President

I am thrilled that we launched our new CHS-MC website. It includes, for the first time, a Women’s Health section to help educate women and girls with bleeding disorders (WGBD) and to raise awareness about WGDB. Our goal is that the Chapter website and our other social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) provide access to trusted information on WGBD.

Congratulations to the CHS-MC Women and Girls Advocacy committee! They had an ambitious plan for 2021 that included the launch of the new WGBD newsletters, developed the Women’s Health section for the website and are about to launch a Public Health Project to raise awareness about WGBD in Manitoba. The committee also continues to advocate for equitable access to comprehensive care for WGBD in partnership with the Manitoba Bleeding Disorders Program. Thanks Christine for supporting us and working long hours to help implement some of our big ideas. Thanks to the CHS-MC Women and Girls Advocacy committee on their exceptional work this year.

Now, it is your turn. We need your help! Please, help us provide the education you need and continue to achieve better care for all WGBD in Manitoba. We would LOVE to hear from you. Please take some time to answer a short survey to help us plan for 2022.

You are not alone. Please feel free to call us, email us and/or send a private message on a social media. We are here for you.

Women's Health Section on New Website

The newly revised Chapter website includes a section dedicated to Women's Health. The primary goal of this section of the site is to direct women in the inherited bleeding disorders community to trusted sources of information that are relevant to women in Manitoba. You will find categories such as Bleeding Assessment, Pipeline to Care, as well as categories dedicated to women with von Willebrand diseaseCarriers of Hemophilia and Platelet Dysfunctions. We will continue to add more information to each section to help our members find the quality information they need to manage their bleeding disorder.

You can help us provide support and information to women in Manitoba by sharing your experiences for the Personal Stories section of the site. We hope that by sharing our stories it will help women with their own journey with a bleeding disorder. We look forward to our members sharing how they came to their diagnosis, how they managed obstacles in their lives, where they found support, where they still need help and how they navigated the system here in Manitoba. We are happy to help you with your story. You are welcome to write it yourself or we can interview you. Your choice!

The Women's Health section would not have been possible without the Chapter's Women and Girls Advocacy committee. Thank you to the committee chair, Milena Pirnat, for your leadership and for creating the content for the website. Thank you to Sandra Penner, Shelley Kubin, Deni Pirnat, and Jacob Figler for your hard work developing the map for quick access to information and for telling us what women in our community need. We look forward this section growing as we work together to support women in Manitoba!

Let's Talk Period

 @letstalkperiod    @lets_talk_period

Let’s Talk Period aims to increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of bleeding disorders. As many as 1 in 1000 individuals may be suffering from a bleeding disorder, but many of these may not understand if their bleeding is normal or abnormal and therefore do not seek help. Through her internationally recognized research program at Queen’s University, Dr. James, Hematologist at Kingston General Hospital, and her team have developed a self-administered bleeding assessment tool (Self- BAT) that will help inform people about their bleeding and guide them toward the help they need.

The Self-Bat is available in both French and English.

Iron Deficiency Management - Supplements and Infusions

Presented by Dr. Karmina Khamisa MD FRCPC

Lucky Iron Fish

Developed in Canada, the Lucky Iron Fish is made from food-grade electrolytic iron powder. When used in cooking, specifically boiling, it releases iron particles that are then consumed and easily absorbed by the body. This is not suitable as a substitute for therapies treating serious cases of iron deficient anemia. It is a good way for people who struggle with the side affects of iron supplements, to get more iron into their diet. You can visit the Lucky Iron website for information on use & care as well as their FAQ section. Dr. Aileen Gray discusses her experience with the Lucky Iron Fish in the Let's Talk Period blog.

If you are interested in trying a Lucky Iron Fish, please contact the Chapter office. We have a supply of the Lucky Iron Fish and the Iron Protection Oil. For those who are interested, we can also provide the Luck Iron Fish e-cookbook.
