PGOSANs are invited to attend our upcoming General Meeting on Wednesday, November 17 at 7:00 pm at The Bradley Center, 975 Shearme Rd, Coombs.
Come on out and support your hard working Directors as they plan for the upcoming year – 2022. Hopefully COVID restrictions will lessen in the New Year and we can get back to normal operations.
The agenda and more details are available here.
On Saturday October 23, 2021, after many months of organizing, VanIsle Walking Soccer held its second Annual Provincial Invitational Walking Soccer Tourney at Arbutus Meadows Arena in Nanoose, BC.
Representatives from the RDN and the BC Senior Games were on hand and were recognized along with the Organizers for both the Nanaimo and Victoria squads and the owners of the facility. Special thanks to the refs, ref's assistants and our Scorekeeper who ensured a smooth event.
Walking Soccer started organized play in Canada right here in Parksville in March 2016. We had 8 players at our first session. Today, the sport has spread across VanIsle and the Province with teams and leagues forming in many cities and towns. The latest entry is the Victoria organization which is off to a great start as they have access to 1200 Senior Soccer players in the GVA and they are embracing the sport as much more of an aerobic workout than they assumed from the name "Walking" Soccer.
The Tourney games were of a good calibre and were enjoyed by the competitors. Many positive comments have been received from the players who attended.
Your PGOSA squad acquitted themselves very well, going undefeated and untied and only allowed one goal in the round robin en route to winning the Tourney.
We look forward to the continued growth of Walking Soccer and many more fun but competitive Tourneys. Also, as the number of players grows, it is hoped that we can offer both a Competitive and a "Relaxed" form of the sport and allow players to choose the level of competition at which they wish to participate.
A terrific day and congratulations to the PGOSA/VanIsle squad for a job well done.

Emergency First-Aid with CPR "A" course - This fun and interactive 7.5 hour course trains people how to react and improvise when dealing with time priority, life threatening emergencies. This course includes initial assessment, disease prevention, secondary survey, airway obstruction, adult CPR (Level A), as well as the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). This course will also cover recognition and first-aid treatment for head and spine injuries, shock, heart attack, stroke, heat exhaustion, sprains and strains and diabetic emergencies. Participants spend the majority of the course doing hands on first-aid, and participating in first-aid scenarios. By practicing with scenarios, students gain confidence, learn to improvise, and become better suited to productively react in emergency situations.

Cribbage Update
A few PGOSANs are enjoying playing cribbage on Wednesday afternoons at The Bradley Center from 1:00 to approximately 3:00 pm. We have lots of room for more to join in. If you are a beginner, then we have members who will help you learn and if you are a “card shark” then we have experienced players you will enjoy playing. Cost is $2.00 weekly drop-in fee and an initial $5.00 to join Bradley Center. Refreshments are served - this is a great social opportunity for those who like to play cards as well as an opportunity to keep those brain neurons firing and growing! Hope to see a few more come out! More information by emailing Jim.
New! PGOSA Book Exchange
Done with a book and not sure what to read next? Bring your book to the PGOSA table on Wednesday morning from 9 - 11, and take a book home with you.
This will be a true exchange - bring one, take one. Bring 5, take 5. (The books have to be transported every week, so this will be enforced strictly.) Do NOT expect to be able to just drop off a bag of books - those books can be donated to Nanaimo Rotary. Click here for more info.
Highlights from Oceanside Community Track Steering Committee
Board and Trustee Representative Committee Report
Trustee Representative: R. Elaine Young
Committee Name: Oceanside Community Track Steering Committee
9:00 AM October 20, 2021 Mandate: To upgrade Ballenas Secondary track so that it can be safely used by all in the Oceanside community.
Task List: From last meeting – all the appointed steering committee members were contacted and invited to the meeting. Updates: School District
- Met with MLA Walker to explore grants and fundraising
- Ballenas Whalers would like to partner with us to upgrade the inside of the track. May not be able fundraise for this. They would like to right size the field, level and grass it. This would require irrigation changes. The School District has upgraded the North field.
- Support letters and shared use agreement from all levels of government. Fundraising
- Working on a fundraising plan for overall management.
- Pushing the social media sharing through facebook.
- Go Fund Me is seeing some big donations coming in. Average donation is $250 to Go Fund Me. We need 851 more individuals need to donate at this level to make our goal.
- Joint Interact/ORCA Bottle Drive on November 6 – Poster to follow from Jane.
- Looking at fine tuning fundraising to identify a few key donors and focusing on that. We need one more significant grant to move us forward.
- Fundraising committee meeting November 3 at 3:00 PM.
