Funding for the Wilmington film workforce initiative will spark growth foe the industry

Over the last three years, Wilmington has regained traction as one of the most sought-after production locations in North Carolina. With several films and TV shows in production and pre-production currently, it can be said that the city is reclaiming the prominence it held in the 1980s as being the setting for a multitude of films. As Wilmington’s film industry continues to grow, so does the amount of production jobs in the area.

Rock band 'Ridgewood' on being created during the pandemic and musical inspiration

Their passion for making music and close proximity during the COVID-19 pandemic brought the band Ridgewood together.

The members of Ridgewood include Matt Dauphin on bass guitar, Charlie Peters on lead guitar, Bennett Hair on drums and Elliot Stanford on rhythm guitar and vocals. When they started playing during the pandemic, they all lived on Ridgewood Heights Drive behind campus.

Mayhem on ice: UNCW's fans are unlike any other

UNCW Hockey knows it would not be the same without its fans.

The Seahawks have been known to draw impressive crowds on the weekends at the Wilmington Ice House. With attendance numbers reaching upwards of 1,000 individuals, UNCW Hockey has a reputation for being the hottest ticket in town.

“Words cannot express how thankful we are as a team to have such a die-hard fan base,” senior forward Sam Koppen said. “I black out every time I take the ice. It’s an adrenaline rush and an amazing feeling knowing the amount of support we get.”

OPINION: The residential parking situation is inconvenient and unfair to on-campus students

With the start of a new semester, both new and returning on-campus students moved into their new housing assignments excited for an in-person experience, the first for some since the pandemic’s initial outbreak. The delta variant continues to threaten that hope, but campus life has persisted in spite of it, allowing a sense of normalcy to return to the college environment. However, an unexpected beast arose in this perfect storm of returners—namely, the wildly oversaturated parking situation on campus.

UNCW announces in-person December commencement and extended COVID-19 guidelines

On Oct. 6, the Office of University Relations sent out an email to all students and faculty announcing December commencement ceremonies will be in person.

The email stated that both summer and fall graduates will be recognized during the commencement exercises on Dec. 11 in Trask Coliseum. The order in which the ceremonies for the different schools will occur is as follows, with the Cameron School of Business and the Watson College of Education taking place first at 9 a.m., followed by the College of Arts and Sciences at 1 p.m., and finally the College of Health and Human Services at 5 p.m.
