Dear Colleague,

Happy November! As our national leaders gather at COP26, we stand with community leaders demanding that their voices are heard.

New Research: Community Leadership and Facilitation in Food Security

The key findings, implications, and recommendations from our Rapid Realist Review of 56 community-led programs are live! Our project, InCLuDE (Impact of Community-led Development on Food Security), has sought to answer How and in what contexts do key aspects of CLD - particularly leadership and facilitation - contribute to resilience and equity in relation to food security?

On Oct 6, at the launch of the findings, Ambassador Donald Steinberg, Expert Adviser to the Administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development, USAID, presented our keynote address, and Susan Wong, Global Lead for Community-Driven Development, World Bank, examined the implications of the research findings for practitioners and funders. In his remarks, Amb. Steinberg invited MCLD to continue to serve as a partner and a sounding board for USAID.
“Around the world, you are known as the eyes, the ears, and the conscience of our global community. And just as you’re being so generous and forthcoming and sharing your knowledge, data, and experience here today as part of the collaborative research, we ask you to continue partnering with us as we refine our localization efforts." - Ambassador Donald Steinberg to MCLD

This learning event was made possible by a grant from The Implementer Led Design, Evidence, Analysis and Learning (IDEAL) Activity. The IDEAL Small Grants Program is made possible by the generous support and contribution of the American people through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The contents of the materials produced through the IDEAL Small Grants Program do not necessarily reflect the views of IDEAL, USAID, or the United States Government.

CLA Case Competition

For over two years, we have expressed our belief in the power of collaboration and the culture of learning that is manifest in our research team. Our entry in USAID Learning Lab's 2021 CLA Case Competition describes our collaborative style and demonstrates the power of CLD. We are excited to announce that we were named one of seven winning cases!

Preparing for COP26

Monthly Movement Call:

The Movement is gearing up for the COP26 Climate Summit, and we spent our October monthly call sharing experiences and ideas around community-led climate impact. We heard from Farayi Mtangadura and Susan Bornstein, World Bicycle Relief and Prof. George Outa, founder of Uranga CBO and professor at the Technical University of Kenya, previously based at the Institute for Climate Change and Adaptation at the University of Nairobi.

To learn more about the links between climate and sustainable mobility, and community-led climate actions for Africa, watch the event recording.

September Covid Call:

We need to begin thinking of health, conservation, and development as interlinked fields. In our September call of the Adapting CLD to Covid 19 series, David Bonnardeux, Director of Environment, Pact, Neil Vora, Pandemic Prevention Fellow, Conservation International, and Janet Edmond, Senior Director for Peace and Development Partnerships, Conservation International, discussed the links between health and the environment. This was followed by exciting breakout group discussions on the ways forward for CLD and climate after the pandemic. Read the key takeaways.

Zambia Training: CLD Assessment Tool

On October 11 and 12, MCLD Zambia held a training on the CLD Assessment Tool, where over 40 participants spent two days unpacking CLD and understanding how to use the CLD Assessment Tool. Together, we brainstormed the meanings behind the characteristics of CLD, including what CLD itself means.

If you would like to organize a special training for your organization or network, please let us know!
