Spring 2022 Course Registration

Course registration for the Spring semester starts on November 29, 2021 and continues until December 9.  A student's actual date of registration is based on the number of credit hours they have earned at the time of registration; the registration schedule can be viewed here.  Starting on November 10, students can view the Spring 2022 schedule of classes.

Students are encouraged to meet with an academic advisor prior to course registration to ensure they are on track with degree requirements and to make a plan for what courses they will take for the upcoming semester.  Students should call NOW to set up an advising appointment- giving themselves time to review the schedule and make a list of ideas/questions for their advisor in preparation of their registration day.  Contact information for academic advisors for students to make an appointment can be found here:
Fee-Based Online Study Services – Helpful or Harmful?

In preparation for finals, it is important for students to be aware of the Rutgers Academic Honor Pledge and university support resources that are in accordance with the Academic Integrity Policy and Code of Student Conduct. This year, following a year of mostly remote instruction, a new online learning module was developed to help students better understand the policy and strategies to avoid violations.  All students are expected to complete the Academic Integrity course found on Canvas. Once logged in, students can access it via the link or search the published courses. The consequences of an Academic Integrity violation can include a disciplinary notation on their transcript, the need to disclose offenses on graduate and professional school applications, and potential loss of academic credit for the course.

What is the Problem?
With the switch to online learning, students can easily be drawn to communication apps and advertisements for online study services that are promoted to help with schoolwork. Common names of services may include Chegg Study, Bartleby and Course Hero, which charge fees for services (often monthly as a subscription). While these are marketed to be study services, students and faculty often report that subscription-based services provide answers to homework assignments and exams. Using such answers (or posting the homework/exam questions without the instructor’s explicit permission) is a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy.

How Can Students Receive Help?
If students find themselves in need of academic assistance in their classes, Rutgers offers services that can help them. These study aids will provide students with the help they need to better understand the material and complete assignments while using appropriate resources to abide by the Honor Pledge, which has students confirm, “On my honor, I have neither received nor given any unauthorized assistance on this examination (assignment).” These campus resources do not have additional fees for students, as they are included as part of term-bill payments.
  • Campus Resources
    • Office hours with the professor can be used to ask questions and discuss concerns
    • Appointments with an academic advisor can help students develop and maintain an academic path
    • Learning Centers offer tutoring, study groups, and academic coaching
    • Writing Centers offer tutoring and enrollment for a Writing Program class
  • More information on campus resources can be found at Success.rutgers.edu
Learning and Well-Being
When students find themselves struggling with understanding academic materials or getting behind with assignments, it can lead to stress and anxiety. If students utilize campus-based resources such as the Learning Centers, it can help them in their classes, provide successful strategies for learning and academic performance, reduce stress, and lessen the likelihood of cheating.

Recommendations and Tips
  • Know that all students at Rutgers University are bound by the Honor Pledge, which says, “On my honor, I have neither received nor given any unauthorized assistance on this examination (assignment).”
  • Speak with your student and find out if they are using a fee-based study service. If they are:
    • have them understand that they don’t need to pay for fee-based or subscription services because Rutgers offers numerous academic support services which do not charge fees
    • help them to understand the risks associated with violating the academic integrity policy and Honor Pledge if using for homework or exam support.
  • Speak with your student about communication apps like Group Me and Discord. These apps are beneficial for communicating with peers, but if used during prohibited times like quizzes and exams or used to share course materials and assignments without the instructor’s permission, then it can lead to violations.
  • Encourage students to speak with their professors if they have questions about the course material or an assignment. The professor may recommend a course of action that will help your student.
  • Encourage students to speak with their academic advisor about their classes and concerns. Students may be able to make an adjustment to their academic plan with their advisor.
  • Recommend to your student that they utilize Rutgers academic support services before they find themselves struggling.
  • Remember that seeking help through the university is better than paying outside companies for help. This will ensure that they do not find themselves knowingly or unknowingly committing offenses.

Alcohol and Other Drug Information

At Rutgers University, our top priority is the health, safety, and success of our entire community. Alcohol and drug use on campus is a reality and use may vary. Our community includes everyone from non-drinkers, responsible drinkers, people seeking assistance with their alcohol and drug use, those in recovery, and everyone in between. The overall health and wellness of our RU community is not just an individual responsibility but a shared and collective responsibility for all.

We continue to seek innovative ways to provide and increase awareness of resources to support and promote healthy behaviors, informed decision making, and responsible choices which encourage resilience. That’s why we created the Rutgers AOD site. It’s a comprehensive and centralized collection of information on alcohol and other drugs, important NJ laws and campus policies, substance-free events, and resources available to the Rutgers community.
