Day of the Dead / Dia de los Muertos
Leavey Library

Learn more about Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), a cultural celebration of life, death, and family celebrated in Mexico, much of Latin America, parts of the united States, Europe, and other countries around the world. The syncretism of indigenous and Catholic beliefs can be seen in many of the traditions carried on each year.

Use the USC Libraries resources to explore:

  •  View exhibits in Leavey Library, 1st floor elevator lobby:  Día de los Muertos Around the World; José Guadalupe Posada's prints of calaveras (skulls)

  • Use online library research guide to find library collections and resources:  libguides.usc.edu/dayofthedead

  • Take one of our calaveras buttons, 1st floor circulation desk:  a limited supply of buttons of Posada's calaveras will be released every day, Oct. 25-Nov. 2

  • Make a paper marigold (Cempasúchil):  by the study rooms and print stations

  • Explore calaveras with online jigsaw puzzles

José Guadalupe Posada, the famed Mexican printmaker, is perhaps best known for La Calavera Catrina -- a nearly ubiquitous symbol of the Day of the Dead. Contact the USC Libraries Special Collections to learn more about our José Guadalupe Posada collection. Visit our library resource guide at libguides.usc.edu/dayofthedead for more information about Día de los Muertos / Day of the Dead and José Guadalupe Posada

The Future of Money:
How the Digital Revolution is Transforming Currencies and Finance

We think we’ve seen financial innovation. We bank from laptops and buy coffee with the wave of a phone. But these are minor miracles compared with the dizzying experiments now underway around the globe, as businesses and governments alike embrace the possibilities of new financial technologies. As Eswar S. Prasad explains, the world of finance is at the threshold of major disruption that will affect corporations, bankers, states, and indeed all of us. The transformation of money will fundamentally rewrite how ordinary people live. Access The Future of Money.

Fundamentals of Ecosystem Science, 2nd Edition

Fundamentals of Ecosystem Science, Second Edition provides a comprehensive introduction to modern ecosystem science covering land, freshwater and marine ecosystems. Ecosystem science is now applied to address a wide range of environmental problems. Written by a group of experts, this updated edition covers major concepts of ecosystem science, biogeochemistry, and energetics. Case studies of important environmental problems offer personal insights into how adopting an ecosystem approach has helped solve important intellectual and practical problems. Access Fundamentals of Ecosystem Science.

Epigenetics and Metabolomics

Epigenetics and Metabolomics, a new volume in the Translational Epigenetics series, offers a synthesized discussion of epigenetic control of metabolic activity, and systems-based approaches for better understanding these mechanisms. Over a dozen chapter authors provide an overview of epigenetics in translational medicine and metabolomics techniques, followed by analyses of epigenetic and metabolomic linkage mechanisms likely to result in effective identification of disease biomarkers, as well as new therapies targeting the removal of the inappropriate epigenetic alterations. Epigenetic interventions in cancer, brain damage, and neuroendocrine disease, among other disorders, are discussed in-depth, with an emphasis on exploring next steps for clinical translation and personalized healthcare. Access Epigenetics and Metabolomics.
