All doctoral students at the faculties of Arts, Languages, Law and Social Sciences are invited to apply for a half-day workshop with this year’s honorary lecturer of the Uppsala Forum Forsskål symposium: Sharon Rider. Participants will give a presentation of their ongoing research projects or projects they are currently developing and receive feedback from Sharon Rider and the group with a view of strengthening the core idea and connect it to the cutting edge of the state of the art. Applications should include a short CV and a half-page description of the topic presented. The deadline for application is Friday, 12 November 2021. Successful candidates will be notified on the 18 November 2020.

Seminarieserie: Bildningens nya vägar

Organizer: Institutionen för moderna språk, institutionen för nordiska språk, med stöd från Uppsala Forum och CIRCUS
Bildning framhålls oftast som något positivt och till och med nödvändigt för att stödja demokrati och rättvisa i samhället. Samtidigt är bildning ett begrepp som ger uttryck för olika värderingar beroende på hur det definieras och praktiseras. I seminarieserien »Bildningens nya vägar« välkomnas studenter och universitetsanställda att delta i ett samtal om hur bildningsideal och bildningspraktiker kan fördjupas, granskas och omformuleras.

Tvekan och osäkerhet är en förutsättning för kunskapssökande. Ovisshet och den tankeverksamhet som den ger upphov till utgör vetenskapens och den högre utbildningens grundvillkor. Det utmanas av dagens innovationspolitik: söker man maximera effektivitet rationaliseras ovisshet bort. Genom en invecklad incitamentstruktur styrs vilka frågor och problem som forskningen begrundar utifrån intressen och mål utstakade av politiken, en illiberal förhållning till vetenskap och utbildning. Politikens inblandning uppfattas därtill inte som otillbörlig. Den vetenskapliga värdesfären upphör att utgöra en delvis autonom del av moderna liberala demokratier. Om inte de lärda må tvista och tvivla över vad som är värt att veta och varför, vem då ska göra det? Symposiet är öppet för allmänheten och har fritt inträde, i pausen serveras förfriskningar.

Principen om ”alla människors lika värde” åberopas allt oftare i politisk retorik. Men vad innebär egentligen? Utan en gemensam förståelse av principens innebörd riskerar den att bli en till intet förpliktande floskel. Seminariet syftar att diskutera tänkbara tolkningar av principen både ur ett teoretiskt och praktiskt politiskt perspektiv. Seminariet inleds med två korta anföranden av Mats Lundström och Anna-Sara Lind. Mats Lundström kommer att tala under rubriken ”Demokrati och alla människors lika värde”. Anna-Sara Lind kommer att tala under rubriken "Regeringsformen och alla människors lika värde".

Civilizational Identity and Politics in Europe and Eurasia

Organizer: Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies (IRES), and Uppsala Forum
This two-day workshop approaches the question of civilizational identity in the 21st century in an interdisciplinary fashion, bringing together specialists in the History of Ideas, International Relations, Political Sociology, Cultural Studies and Political Science. Taking the cases of Central, Eastern Europe and Eurasia, the main thrust of the workshop is conceptualising civilizationalism alongside nationalism and populism, as well as highlighting common and divergent trends in Europe and Eurasia through a variety of cases.
