The Hotel Royer
"Thank you, and welcome to the Hotel Royer.  This day is a LONG time coming.  I’d like to welcome our partners from Icon Hospitality  Pervais Usman and Joseph Prior, present and former City of Urbana staff members, present and former City Council members, our Historic Preservation Commission Chair, Alice Novak, and community members.

We’re standing at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Green Street. This intersection was one of the most prominent in downtown Urbana 100 years ago.  The hotel was built at an angle facing southeast, with this grand front door opening onto Broadway and Green. I can imagine that 100 years ago, the  group of hotel investors stood right here and decided that THIS was the location where new hotel should be built. The Urbana-Lincoln Hotel funded by  community members  who bought “stock” invest in construction . It officially opened in early 1924.

The local investors had a vision for this site. They rejected architect  Joseph Royer’s first design, which was a multistory, rectangular block. Royer went back to the drawing board and came up with the quirky design that eventually was built. Years later, Royer described his design in a letter as a “rambling type of structure of English design.”

Over the years, the Hotel Royer has been owned by many, lovingly maintained by some, mismanaged by others and through it all,  it has survived.  The one, consistent theme is that many people still care about this property and have strong opinions about it.  Those who love this building tie it to the experiences they had here.  What I’ve heard about over the past dozen years, are the MEMORIES. This is where people came to celebrate weddings, anniversaries, proms, honeymoons, Mom’s Day weekends, Dad’s Day weekend. When I say, Jumer’s, Urbana Lincoln, etc., what invariably follows is, “Oh, that’s where we had our wedding reception.”  “That’s where my parents stayed when they brought me to the U of I.”  “That’s where I had my first job.”  Special things happened here that were important in the lives of residents and visitors.

Over the past 100 years, people ate, slept, and worked here at the intersection of Broadway and Green.  Lasting memories were made at this intersection of history and hospitality.  We are so looking forward to honoring that history while moving into the future to create another 100 years of memories in the Hotel Royer as part of the Tapestry Collection by Hilton."

This speech was given by Urbana Mayor, Diane Wolfe Marlin, at the groundbreaking ceremony for the Hotel Royer on October 28, 2021.

Automated License Plate Readers

Our community is facing a crisis in gun violence. Over the past few years, we’ve experienced an increase in shootings, injuries, and deaths. People are obtaining more powerful weapons and have used them to shoot indiscriminately into homes, cars, and public gatherings. There are many long-term solutions and short-terms steps that must be taken to disrupt the pattern of retaliatory shootings. One of the tools that is being successfully used in other cities to identify vehicles involved in shootings and other crimes is the Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR).

The City of Urbana is proposing use of Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs) for the following reasons:

  1. ALPRs are an investigative tool that can help identify vehicles involved in shootings and other crimes.
  2. ALPRs provide information that witnesses and victims are unable, unwilling, or afraid to provide.
  3. ALPRs provide “real time” information through a snapshot of license plates and the rear of vehicles.
  4. ALPRs improve county-wide collaboration, across jurisdictions, to solve shootings and other crimes.
  5. ALPRs remove human error and bias from vehicle identification.
  6. ALPRs are cost-effective and can be strategically deployed.
  7. ALPR data is owned and protected by the City.
  8. ALPRs can help disrupt the pattern of retaliatory shootings that has traumatized families and neighborhoods in recent years.
