'Soul Seeds' video is soul food

A feel-good must watch not only for gardeners!

The video is a heart-warming 6-minute Shaw Spotlight masterpiece featuring Greenways' wonderful Mountain View Community Gardener, Jim Chisholm, and his love for growing food.

"Getting your hands in the dirt is one of the best things about it", explains Jim. Producer, Dan Peruzzo, has caught the most beautiful footage of Jim and his lovely fellow gardeners at the community garden up in Charstate Park. 'Soul Seeds' is an inspiring celebration of growing food & community and has been brought to life by the Campbell River Community Foundation, Dan/Shaw Spotlight, Jim, Laurel, Craig, Cynthia, Sandra & Jim's fellow Mountain View Community Gardeners!

It's a good time to get on Greenways' waitlists for the (1) Mountain View and (2) Laughing Willow Community Gardens. (1) is located in Charstate Park in the Merecroft area and (2) is in Willow Point. Email us at info@greenwaystrust.ca, to let us know which waitlist you'd like to be added to, your phone number and name. Visit the gardens virtually on Facebook:

Annual Fundraiser

What a catch!

Esther & Brent Hollink and their Brown's Bay Resort crew have the biggest hearts! Year after year they are leaving us speechless and full of gratitude for their incredible efforts to raise funds for our charity.

THANK YOU!

This and last year the Brown's Bay family ran virtual 'Non-Chum Derbys' and we are crossing all our fins that next fall they'll be able to run an in-person derby once again!

New on Crew
Welcome Katrice Baur!

"My name is Katrice, I recently moved to Campbell River, and I am so excited to have joined Greenways Land Trust as a Watershed Restoration Technician. I have my honours degree in Ecological Restoration with a strong passion for habitat restoration and wildlife conservation. I feel fortunate to have grown up on a lake north of Kingston, Ontario surrounded by nature where I was often out exploring in the woods or snorkeling around observing fish and other aquatic creatures underwater. I love learning about and experiencing everything the great outdoors offers, from rock climbing to surfing and enjoy listening to podcasts – my favorites are Green Dreamer and Future Ecologies!

I am looking forward to all the new skills and experiences I will gain working alongside a dedicated and passionate team and getting to know the wonderful community of Campbell River."

No Room for Broom
Restoration @ Dick Murphy Park

377 native shrubs and conifers have found a new home on the Tyee Spit in October. Sunshine, smiles, supersoil and a good portion of mulch have given them a great head start. The rain is just another gain. The mostly shrubby newcomers are going to help the little ecosystem between ocean and estuary recover and prevent the spread of non-native species.

It didn't look like we added close to 400 plants to the site. "That's because they look like they belong," said biologist, Camille Andrews, Greenways' Habitat Management Coordinator and priceless mentor for this project.

THANK YOU to the City of Campbell River for funding the 'Broom Project 2021' and taking this project to the next level: from invasives mapping and removal to restoration!

THANK YOU to our incredibly hard working Conservation Team volunteers and Watershed Restoration crew. If you are interested in volunteering with us for similar projects, please email us at volunteer@greenwaystrust.ca or visit our 'Get Involved' section on the website to learn more!

Celebrating 25 years of Conservation in CR

1996-2021

This beautiful gift came in the mail for us from our friends at the Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia - see the picture! We'll find a special spot for it in our office and are looking forward to many more years of caring for Campbell River's natural areas.

Celebrating community & environment!

When back in 1996 a handfull of great, community minded, nature loving folks signed some paperwork to make their dream a reality, they were unaware of what they were inspiring for generations to come. While taking its first baby steps, Greenways Land Trust proposed a budget of less than $10k for the first year of operation, 1997. Twenty-five years later the charity is managing an annual project budget of between $300-400k and keeps growing its team to continuously and sustainably enhance our local greenspaces.

Project Update

Fruit Tree Project

2021 was a fruitful year! We would like to thank everyone who made this year’s Fruit Tree Project such a success! With the help of our amazing Coordinators, volunteers, community partners and homeowners, we collected more than 3,200 lbs of fruit! Of this amazing harvest, roughly 2,300 lbs was donated to 13 community partners who helped distribute these healthy foods. We were also very excited to partner with Robron’s new Food Security class this year - a group who not only helped us pick fruit, but also got to use the fruit to learn all about making jams, chutneys, and other delicious foods!

CONGRATULATIONS

Fruit Tree Project coordinators Dawn Summer Langerak and Teena Edmundson won the City's Stewardship Award for Pesticide Free/Urban Agriculture at this year's Haig-Brown Festival. In the photo [by Campbell River Mirror] you can see Dawn Summer picking plums. Read more about the project in this Campbell River Mirror article from July 2021: "Campbell River fruit picking project a sweet success".

THANK YOU!

We acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia for our Fruit Tree Project program!
