October 2021 was a very eventful month: we reached a few milestones in terms of vaccination which marked the beginning of a new ‘normal’ for many Australians. As international travel has resumed and with the increased movements of people within and across states, we know that we will have to live with COVID-19 in the community.

Workforce and Aged Care Reforms

The Human Services Skills Organisation (HSSO) hosted a Workforce Forum on 14 October 2021. Unsurprisingly, the Aged Care Workforce dominated the discussions, and a summary can be downloaded here. The second webinar provided information on the Home-Care reforms and Payment in Arrears and was held on 20 October 2021. A summary can be downloaded here.

COVID-19 Vaccine Update
Regular updates on the vaccine roll out can be accessed on the Department of Health’s website. More information about the Disability Clinic Hubs are available here. To understand how to show proof of your vaccination status, visit the Services Australia’s portal.
The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) is recommending a booster dose of COVID-19 vaccine to individuals who have had both doses of their primary course of a COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months ago. More information about this recommendation is available here and the Department of Health’s website.
Update and Webinar: CHSP transition to payment in arrears
The Department has released an update about the implementation of the payment in arrears, including administrative arrangements and next steps. You can access it here. Moreover, a webinar will be organised to update CHSP providers on the 2022-23 extension on 17 November 2021, 10.30am - 12.00pm (details and link are available here). It will be recorded and uploaded on the Department’s resources for the aged care sector's webpage.

Serious Incident Response Scheme (SIRS) for in-home aged care

Earlier this year, providers of in-home aged care, peak bodies, members of the aged care workforce, senior Australians and their families provided feedback about the design of the SIRS for in-home care. If interested, you can read the feedback collected here.

New Workforce Advisory Service
From 11 October 2021, residential aged care and home care service providers can apply for a free, independent, and confidential workforce advisory service. This service supports providers to develop workforce training and skills plans. The service also provides strategies to help providers attract, retain and grow the skills of workers. PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) will deliver these services until 30 June 2023. Click here for more information.

On 25 August 2021, the Fair Work Commission handed down a decision to extensively vary the Social, Community, Home Care and Disability Services Industry Award 2010 (the Award). The changes will come into effect from 1 July 2022 and it is important for home and community care providers to be across the changes and how to integrate them into various business systems. Caring for Carers   Accessing the Carer Gateway
Carers Australia has recently called for GPs to help improve carer wellbeing and health through social prescribing. You can learn more about social prescribing in this Fact Sheet. Remember, a person is a carer if they are looking after someone with disability, a medical condition, mental illness or who is frail due to age. A range of free support and services are available via the Carer Gateway or by calling 1800 422 737.
