October Round-up

October marks a huge milestone for High Trees, as renovations on our main building, the St Martin’s Learning Centre have finally begun! This has been a long time coming for our organisation and the investment into our space is going to transform the way our services run and the support we can offer our local community. All our services will continue to operate as usual in venues across Tulse Hill, click here to download a map.

Throughout October, High Trees celebrated Black History Month with our service users. Young people at the Adventure Playground explored their dreams inspired by Martin Luther King and cooked up tasty Caribbean food. Our Place for All Partnership hosted a range of events including ESOL classes focused on Black History, and a walking tour around Brixton hosted by Avril Nanton.

Explore Outdoor Play & Practice English Skills!

We’re very excited to have secured funding with BBC Children in Need to run an ESOL Forest School for parents with children under five.

These ESOL Play & Learn sessions will allow parents learning English, to come together with other parents, practice their conversation skills, and get involved in creative outdoor play with their children.

The sessions begin weekly from the 18th of November, get in touch for more information & sign up via our website.

Collaborating on Employment Support

Our Employment and Welfare team have partnered up with Black Thrive to support people with lived experience of mental health issues apply for roles within the organisation.

Our experienced employment advisors have coached applicants on application writing, the interview process and growing their confidence and skills. All applicants High Trees put forward have secured interviews for roles as Peer Mentors!

Study African History & Culture

Our popular Africology course is returning in November! Africology: The study of African phenomena, is an interactive course looking at the impact of African history on the world and exploring the concept of race.

As Black History Month draws to a close, this course is the perfect way to continue learning and celebrating Black history & culture.

Building Power in the Community

The Justice for Housing Association Tenants, a group made up of Lambeth residents, have launched a website and petition demanding repayment of excess water charges.

The group, supported by High Trees’ Community Action team, recently met with Tulse Hill Councillor, Mary Atkins. Mary has previously provided updates on Lambeth Council’s progress on refunds, and this advocation is a great step in the right direction to reach the group’s demands.
