Community Invited to Veterans Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony on Monday, Nov. 8

In honor of Veterans Day, community members are invited to attend a brief wreath-laying ceremony at East Lansing’s Medal of Honor Memorial and Veterans Monument on Monday, Nov. 8 at 11:30 a.m.
 
The City of East Lansing and the Lansing-based 1st Battalion, 24th Marines will be laying wreaths to honor all of the brave men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces, including U.S. Marine Corps Reserve 2nd Lt. Sherrod E. Skinner, Jr. 2nd Lt. Skinner was an East Lansing war hero who received the Medal of Honor posthumously for bravery exhibited during the Korean War.

East Lansing’s Medal of Honor Memorial and Veterans Monument are located on the main entry grounds of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road. Additional information about both the monument and memorial can be found here.

All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre to Bring “The Hobbit” to the Stage

All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre is excited to be performing "The Hobbit" live this November.

More than 60 area youth have been busy rehearsing and working hard on their crews to bring this family-friendly performance to the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC) stage, 819 Abbot Road. 

Adapted from author J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy story, "The Hobbit" follows Bilbo as he sets off as chief robber to recover an important treasure. It's the last thing a sensible hobbit would want to do, but it results in several benefits for Bilbo and all the hobbits who inhabit Middle Earth. 

Show times are as follows: 
  • Nov. 5 & Nov. 12: 7 p.m.
  • Nov. 6 & Nov. 13: 3 p.m.
  • Nov. 7 & Nov. 14: 3 p.m. 
Tickets are $7 for youth (17 and under), $10 for adults (18 and older). Community members can purchase tickets ahead of time by visiting the ELHCC Box Office or by calling (517) 333-2580 ext. 0. For more information, visit http://www.cityofeastlansing.com/allofus.

Audition for AECT's Production of "Treasure Island"

All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre will be holding open auditions this month for its upcoming winter production of "Treasure Island."

Area youth, ages 9-18, can audition for a cast or crew position and no experience is necessary. Auditions will be held Thursday, Nov. 18 and Friday, Nov. 19 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center (ELHCC), 819 Abbot Road. Those auditioning will only need to attend one of the audition times.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, appointments are required to audition. Those interested in auditioning can reserve a time slot at https://www.cityofeastlansing.com/816/Auditions.

Additionally, an audition workshop to help potential cast members prepare for the audition experience will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 17 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the ELHCC and costs $15 ($10 for members). Registration Open for Buddy Basketball

The East Lansing Department of Parks, Recreation and Arts is excited to offer Buddy Basketball, a program designed to introduce participants to the sport of basketball. 

Youth, ages 5-7, will learn basic basketball handling skills and motor skill development. Additionally, each 50-minute session will include drills, activities and scrimmaging. The sessions will be led by a coach, but parent involvement is encouraged for extra support.
 
Buddy Basketball will be offered in two sessions, Jan. 8-29 and Feb. 5-26, and sessions will take place in 50-minute intervals from 9 a.m.- 2 p.m. Additionally, all participants will receive their own basketball to take home.

Save the Date for Winter Glow

The popular, annual Winter Glow event - East Lansing's free, outdoor winter festival - will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 2-5 p.m. in downtown East Lansing. Community members will be able to enjoy a variety of fun-filled seasonal activities, including live music, an outdoor holiday farmers market, ice carving, winter photo scenes, children's activities hosted by the East Lansing Public Library and more! East Lansing Public Art Gallery Featured Collection: "Diverse"

The East Lansing Public Art Gallery is excited to welcome East Lansing artist Jean Weir and feature her collection, titled "Diverse," this November. The exhibit opens Friday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. and runs through Thursday, Nov. 30. 

The public art gallery is located on the second floor of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center, 819 Abbot Road, and admission is free! The gallery is open to the public Monday through Friday, 6 a.m.-8 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m. To purchase art from the exhibit, contact Public Art Gallery Director Yvette Robinson at gyvette22@yahoo.com.

Holiday Hours at the East Lansing Hannah Community Center

The East Lansing Hannah Community Center will have the following adjusted hours for the Thanksgiving holiday:
  • Wednesday, Nov. 24: 6 a.m.- 6 p.m.
  • Thursday, Nov. 25: Closed
  • Friday, Nov. 26: Closed
  • Saturday, Nov. 27: Closed
  • Sunday, Nov. 28: Closed
