COVID Vaccine Available Soon for Children Ages 5-11

I hope this finds you well.

Federal regulators are expected to authorize the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5 to 11 as soon as this week and the Santa Clara County Public Health Department is ready to ramp up its vaccination efforts in response.

Approximately 167,000 children between the ages of 5 and 11 live in Santa Clara County and will be eligible for vaccination.

The pediatric Pfizer vaccine will be administered similar to the adult version, in two doses spaced 21 days apart. It is one-third the size of the adult vaccine.

Unlike when adult vaccines were first authorized at the end of 2020, the Public Health Department does not expect there to be any shortages of the pediatric version. They anticipate receiving more than 55,000 doses of it next week, including approximately 11,000 doses that will be sent to retail pharmacies.

More than 85% of eligible Santa Clara County residents have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19, and almost 90% have had at least one dose. We remain a national leader in vaccination rates.

However, there are still thousands of eligible Santa Clara County residents who have not gotten vaccinated.

COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective, free, and widely available to everyone 12 and older.

All County Health System mass vaccination sites and all general community-based mobile sites are vaccinating anyone ages 12 and older. Youth between 12 to 17-years old need to provide a signed consent form from a parent or legal guardian. For County-operated sites, the consent form is available here.

The most up-to-date information about how and where to get vaccinated can be found at www.sccfreevax.org. COVID-19 vaccinations are available with or without an appointment at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds.

Residents without access to the internet can make vaccination appointments by phone for the County Health System sites through the Valley Connection Call Center at 408-970-2000 or by dialing 2-1-1.

The Call Center is open Monday through Friday from 7am to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 4:30pm.  Assistance is available in English, Spanish, Vietnamese, and multiple other languages.

You can also get vaccinated at pharmacies throughout the County, including many Walgreen's, CVS, and Costco locations.
