Stories from Another Day Podcast

In the early hours of November 22, 1879, the ill-fated Waubuno left the Collingwood harbour for Parry Sound. The side-wheel steamer was last seen by the Christian Island lighthouse keeper before disappearing into Georgian Bay with all hands. Indigenous History Feature

This detailed birch bark basket is believed to have been donated to the Collingwood Museum by Collingwood resident Madeleine Boucher Harvie as it connects to a large, personal collection that was recently received by the Royal Ontario Museum.

Madeleine made frequent summer trips to the town of Nicholson on Lake Windermere in Northern Ontario in the 1940s and 1950s. During her visits she purchased numerous baskets and model canoes made by an Anishnaabeg (Ojibwa) couple, Clara and Joseph Candassie, who resided in the area.

A large portion of Madeleine’s collection was donated to the Royal Ontario Museum in 2017 and has been designated a Collection of National Significance as it provides an indigenous perspective on the history of Northern Ontario. The baskets, made between 1940 and 1955, illustrate the continued importance of locally available natural materials and traditional skills in both everyday life and for use in commercial wares. The Collingwood Museum is committed to sharing monthly posts that showcase objects from the Indigenous Collection and our efforts to learn more about the cultures, communities, families, and experiences they represent.

Stories of Unsettling Lore

Halloween season may be over, but you can still find the Stories of Unsettling Lore series on the Collingwood Museum Facebook page or the Town of Collingwood's YouTube channel! In the series, the Collingwood Museum presented four short features based on Collingwood lore, written by museum staff and volunteers.

Do you know any more unsettling local lore? We'd love to hear your stories!
