Updates on Subscribed Resources

Missed the SAGE Business Cases onboarding on Sep 28? (I did.) Watch the recording.

Incorporate the S&P Capital IQ Certification into your curriculum! This certification is self-paced with an estimated time commitment of 5 hours. Students experience real-world scenarios with the use of microsimulations in the course. Complete the form to register interest in the S&P Capital IQ Certification program, and Capsim - their certification partner - will be in touch with log-in instructions.

Also: Attend our Capital IQ onboarding session on Nov 5 (Fri), 10 – 11 am. The recorded session will be shared after the event.

Refinitiv Workspace introduced a proprietary curated Twitter feed [TWTR] covering financial influencers, including financial market commentators, analysts, traders, global business leaders, political figures, governing bodies, financial media organizations, and journalists.

Videos for Your Teaching

I am curating video content for in-class business instruction. Have something to contribute? Send it to me, and I will include it in future issues.

Wall Street Journal has a video explainer series called “The Economics Of,” sharing stories on how successful businesses generate revenue. Each video is 6 – 8 minutes with English captions. Their latest episode is on how Warby Parker’s online-only strategy has evolved to include physical retail.
Redfin’s Job Opportunity Tool (27 min presentation; 38 min Q&A): describes how Redfin used a combination of public and private data, including the LEHD Origin-Destination Employment Statistics (LODES), to create the Redfin Opportunity Score. Presentation slides & transcript available.
Introduction to S&P Capital IQ Platform (42 min): covers basic layout & three data content areas of companies, people, and transactions. Includes three case studies using the screening tool.

Business Research Data

This revised section helps instructors & students find both commercial and public/open data and supports data literacy skills. Excited to share the dataset you discovered? Send it to me, and I will include it in future issues.

Consumer points-of-Interest (POI): SafeGraph is a mobile phone data analytics company with a Core Places dataset covering physical places in the U.S., U.K., & Canada. It includes business listing information (phone number, business category, open hours) and POI location info (lat/long, physical address, and building footprint). Multiple access methods include download, GraphQL API, & bulk data delivery. You can also upload your CSV & match it with their data. You qualify for their no-cost access to academic researchers! Furthermore, find support and community with other geospatial data enthusiasts on their Slack workspace.
Labor unions: Connecticut’s government workforce is the most unionized state in the country. What about private employers? Under the National Labor Relations Act, they may voluntarily recognize unions by notifying the NLRB using Form NLRB-5581. Forest Greg (DataMade) has compiled the data from 2009 to early 2021 by filing FOIA requests to the NLRB. Available on GitHub as a flat data file. H/T to Data is Plural.
Global Chinese development finance: AidData, a research lab at William & Mary, has a new granular dataset containing 13,000+ development projects worth $843 billion financed by more than 300 Chinese government institutions and state-owned entities across 165 countries from 2000 – 2017. It is the most comprehensive dataset of its kind. Start exploring at their project landing page, with a focus on China’s Belt & Road Initiative.
