When your building is located in a cold-weather climate considering the following points during the design phase will help protect against the chill.
1. Quality Windows
Windows should be at least double-paned and should have adequate weather stripping. Windows (and doors) that are not airtight can cause major drafts.
2. Sun Position
If possible, position windows toward the sun. The added direct sunlight will help warm the inside of your building. In the summer months, drapes or curtains can be utilized to prevent overheating.
3. Plan for Snow Loads
A sloped roof will help avoid snow buildup and snow load on your building. Note that slate and wood shingle roofing does not shed snow very easily.
4. Great Insulation
There are different types and levels of insulation. The architect will guide the selection process and help choose the best one suited for your building.
