SBWN Conference 2021: Staying Connected

We're bringing you this special edition of our newsletter to announce that (drumroll.....) registration for our conference is officially open!

Join us on 27 November, 10-6pm, online for a wonderful day of talks, panels, (re-)connecting with ourselves and each other, 1:1s with publishing insiders and more!

You can read all about it over on our site.

Tickets are free or Pay What You Can (suggested £5+), and captioning and BSL interpretation are available for most conference events.

Our Keynote, Panels, Closing Reading and Drop-In Chat Room are open to writers, creatives, and literary professionals from all backgrounds, while our workshop and our 1:1s with publishing insiders are open to Black writers and writers of colour in/from Scotland.

We can't wait to see you there!

In the meantime...

....why not check out the latest offerings in our Metaphors for a Black Future programme?

Sign up to receive writing prompts in your inbox throughout November from Amanda Thomson! Amanda is a visual artist and writer who is also a lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art.

She earned her doctorate in interdisciplinary arts practice, based around the landscapes and the forests of the North of Scotland, in 2013. Her first book, A Scots Dictionary of Nature, is published by Saraband Books; and a collaboration with Elizabeth Reeder, microbursts, a collection of lyric and intermedial essays on care and grief, was published by Prototype Publishing in February 2021. She is currently working on her second book.

Then on 21st November, join us and Sheree Mack to invoke palimpsests - composite surfaces, sutured landscapes, seamed memories and layered absence and presence.

Just as within the landscape there is a layering of different landforms, reflecting different timeframes and influences, so too within our bodies there are layers of identities built upon over time and space, histories and legacies.

Let’s spend some time imaginatively walking through the landscape, connecting with nature at the same time as connecting with ourselves. Let’s peel back the layers within to explore our essence, our burning cores and all that fuels them; belonging, ancestral wisdom, race, justice, trauma, nature and healing.

Sheree Mack is a Creatrix with a practice which manifests through poetry, storytelling, image & the unfolding histories of Black people. She engages audiences around Black women’s voices & bodies, Black feminism, ecology & memory. She facilitates national & international creative workshops & retreats in the landscape, encouraging & supporting women on their journey of remembrance back to their bodies & authentic selves.

We're also on Instagram! If you aren't already, do consider following us on our Instagram platform here where we share the latest about our events, showcase our amazing network members and keep you in the loop. :)

Thanks for reading!
