As an athlete, I had a lot of good coaches and the best ones were those who gave me the skills, abilities, mindset, and the confidence to go out on to the floor and compete. Ultimately, we want the same thing for our kids in the arena of life - to have them know that there are no guarantees for success, there will be setbacks, mistakes, problems, and even failures, but still have them say to us “put me in coach, I’m ready to play.”

Disappointment, challenges, obstacles, setbacks, and failures are all part of the human experience. In fact, the ability to handle them well is one of the keys to success in this world. The person who can bounce back, tackle problems, and handle adversity, is someone who is resilient and the focus of our theme this quarter.

As parents, we should not expect that our kids will naturally become resilient on their own. It is not something that happens overnight, comes from one event, or forms out of a conversation or two. It is developed over time, and like our muscles, takes effort, practice, and time to develop.

About 15-20 years ago, a term began to appear frequently in articles and books about the rise in overprotective parents called “helicopter parents.” This was referring to some parents who were always hovering around their children, ready to swoop in to help or protect their kids. About 5-10 years ago, this evolved even further as some parents became even more overprotective and were called “lawnmower parents.” This describes parents moving from being a helicopter that hovers around a child, to a parent who is consistently in front of their child, mowing down all obstacles or problems that may be in their way.

Unfortunately, the helicopter and lawnmower parents of this world do the absolute worst thing possible by removing the chance for their kids to practice and develop resilience. They take away the chance to face setbacks and learn to bounce back, to learn how to deal with failure and grow from it, to make mistakes and to learn from them, to see challenges not as something to avoid but instead something to tackle. We may be doing it out of love for our children, but when we mow down all the obstacles in front of them, we are cheating them of the opportunity to develop resilience.

It is not easy, but we need to let our children face the challenges of life. We need to stop rescuing them. We need to stop mowing down and removing all the obstacles. This does not mean that we just walk away and let them face the challenges on their own. Instead of being a helicopter or lawnmower, the best thing we can do is become their coach. A coach is not actually out on the floor, field, or stage, but a coach helps his/her players through encouragement, advice, questions, and strategies, and does so from the sidelines. A coach works with his/her players before the game and helps them practice and develop. We can do the same thing for our kids; coach them through their challenges, setbacks, failures, and mistakes. This can be done in a variety of ways:

  • Help them see their challenges as a positive thing in life.
  • Ask them questions that help them learn from their challenges and then teach them to ask those questions themselves.
  • Coach them to face their fears, not avoid them.
  • Teach them to problem-solve rather than solve it for them.
  • Encourage them with their struggles but do not remove the struggles.
  • Give them tips and strategies to use when facing their problems.

It's the Last Week of Annual Fund 2021

We have ONE WEEK left in the 2021 Annual Fund! We're so grateful for donors who have helped us raise over RM 100,000! Today, we're highlighting the largest Annual Fund Priority: the Learning Lab. The Learning Lab serves an important purpose by providing a space for students who need additional support at school, for a variety of reasons. The staff in Learning Support are passionate about giving students the tools and resources they need to succeed. The current Learning Lab lacks a comforting and community atmosphere, but a few changes will make all the difference in a student's learning experience!

Furniture upgrades will create a more inviting and calming environment, and provide developmentally appropriate furniture so students are better able to learn. When students feel comfortable and safe, they are able to focus more and engage with learning more effectively.

The Learning Lab is a home-base for our students with learning differences, disabilities, and who are highly able. It is a place that makes students WANT to come to school. Help make this important initiative possible by donating to the Annual Fund and designating your gift to Learning Lab Upgrades.

Mid-Semester Break Changes

🇰🇷 중간 방학 기간 변경  🇨🇳 学期放假时间变更

As COVID-19 continues to affect our school year plans, we have decided to shorten our mid-semester break from two weeks to one week, and extend our summer by one week.

The mid-semester break will now be March 28–April 1, 2022. This decision also affects the end of our school year. The last day of school will now be May 31, 2022, and graduation will be June 1, 2022.

While we understand that the second semester is busy and want to prioritize rest, we are taking into consideration the continuing quarantine requirements (currently one week for international travel) as well as the limited opportunities for travel in the spring. We also hope this gives families more time in the summer for meaningful travel.

We hope that this decision will allow families to plan their mid-semester and summer breaks appropriately. Please see our School Calendar webpage for the updated dates.

PowerSchool Lunch Updates

With high school students returning to campus on Monday, we have opened up lunch updates on the PowerSchool Parent Portal for high school

Please note that all students are signed up for semester lunch by default, so you must change this in PowerSchool if you would rather use the pay-per-day option. Please check your option, even if you made this change earlier in the school year, since we reset the system during online school.

The option to change your lunch status is available through TODAY, November 5, for high school students.

Thank You for the Support of PTO Bake Sale 2021!

🇰🇷2021 학부모회(PTO) 베이크세일에 참여해 주셔서 감사합니다

With so much of the past 20 months being unpredictable, it was extra special to see our Dalat community come together for a familiar event — the Parent-Teacher Organization Bake Sale. While some parents and students got to work shopping, baking, and decorating to provide the most mouth-watering selection of goodies, others eagerly placed orders, and yet others contributed financially. We are excited to share with you that the bake sale raised a total of RM9,026 towards Annual Fund 2021! What a sweet way to contribute to some much-needed upgrades for our school! (pun intended) Here’s a collection of photos from the day! Once again, THANK YOU for your generosity and care! We are #BetterTogether.
