Countdown to voice for regional Australia conference

There are three weeks to go until the Sustainable Economic Growth for Regional Australia (SEGRA) Conference arrives in Kalgoorlie-Boulder.

SEGRA is Australia’s premier event for discussing economic development and issues affecting regional, rural and remote Australia, attracting delegates from all levels of Government, industry, academics, and regional and economic development practitioners from across the nation.  

The program has a line-up of high-calibre speakers including Noel Richards of Deloitte Access Economics, Dr Stefan Hajkowicz from CSIRO, and Craig Shepherd from PWC. 

Day one features a Celebrating Indigenous Business plenary session featuring Aboriginal and Torres Strait business leaders, including GEDC Board member Rowena Leslie, sharing their experiences building capability and generating economic prosperity for Aboriginal people through Aboriginal business. 

Delegates are encouraged to participate in networking events around the conference program or join the local industry or tourism gems tours on offer.

SEGRA has also announced a 50 per cent discount on registrations for not-for-profit organisations using the code SEG21NFP.

ECCI Business Awards

The Esperance Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ECCI) hosted its Annual Business Awards event at the weekend, recognising the business community and celebrating its achievements over the past 12 months.

GEDC was delighted to sponsor the Rising Star Award, presented at the event by CEO Kris Starcevich to Shannon Blampied, the winner for 2021.

The Business Awards also showcased local food and beverage producers with the launch of the Goldfields-Esperance Food and Beverage Capability guide.

This online resource profiles food and beverage businesses across the Goldfields-Esperance region and was produced in partnership by the GEDC, Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development and ECCI, with design by Esperance-based Jayde Guest Photography.

GEDC Board Meeting

The GEDC Board travelled to Laverton for its October Board meeting.

The Board met with representatives from the Shire of Laverton including Shire President Patrick Hill and visited the Laverton CRC and the newly expanded Great Beyond Visitor Centre.

The Board also received a presentation from Australian Potash, which is working in partnership with Central Regional TAFE, MEEDAC, local shires, mining companies and local Aboriginal people to deliver local skills and employment pathways through the Laverton Training Centre.

New Housing and Land for Kalgoorlie-Boulder

An additional 31 residential lots have been released for sale by Development WA at the popular Karlkurla Greenview Estate in Kalgoorlie-Boulder to help meet strong community demand.

The two new stages at Greenview offer lots between 544sqm and 888sqm, starting from $159,000.

Construction started in mid-August and is anticipated to be completed early next year.

Last week, also marked the arrival of new public housing for Kalgoorlie-Boulder with the installation of new high-quality rapid-built dwellings, as part of the State Government’s investment in social housing.

Regional Skills Summit

The GEDC participated in the Goldfields-Esperance Regional Skills Summit hosted by the Minister for Education and Training, the Hon Sue Ellery MLC, in Kalgoorlie-Boulder on 24 October.

Attended by around 40 regional business and industry leaders and community representatives, the Skills Summit provided an opportunity to discuss innovative solutions to support the growth of a local skilled workforce.

Insights from the Skills Summit will form the basis of a local action plan which will be implemented by the Department of Training and Workforce Development over the coming months.

New Chinese Decrees for Imported Food

New Chinese Government decrees require all overseas manufacturers of imported food to be registered. The requirements capture a broad range of food products, including low risk foods. Businesses can access more information from Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment.
 

Regional Covid-19 Vaccinators sought

The WA Country Health Service (WACHS) is seeking applications from people who live in country WA and are looking for an opportunity to work in the vaccination rollout. Under the direction of a registered health professional, the COVID vaccinator can administer COVID-19 vaccines in accordance with WA Health COVID-19 Vaccination Program Standard Operating Procedures and legislative requirements. Applications open until 30 April 2022.
 

Construction of Group Dwellings, Leonora

The Department of Communities requires the services of a suitably qualified builder for the construction of two group dwellings at Lot 64 (99) Tower Street Leonora. The tender closes on Friday 19 November 2021.

Mining Activity Business Information Session – Hopetoun

In partnership with the Fitzgerald Business Network, GEDC is hosting a business information session featuring mining companies First Quantum Minerals, Medallion Metals and Orocobre (formerly Galaxy). The forum be held in Hopetoun on Thursday 4 November and will update business across the region on resource projects, procurement processes, and further business opportunities. Invitation to Curtin University’s ‘Go Local – Industry Pitch'

Curtin University is launching a new Go Local study experience in 2022, which will bring students into the regions to collaborate with industry and community on real-world projects. An event introducing industry partners to the program will be held at 4pm on 11 November at the WMC Conference Centre in Kalgoorlie. RSVPs are invited by 8 November 2021. Regional Start-Ups sought for West Tech Fest 2021

Innovation Cluster and South West Angels are seeking EOIs from regionally based start-up businesses to share in online and in-person training on pitching and investor preparation, with an opportunity to present at the Regional Innovation Showcase on 6 December as part of the West Tech Fest Innovation Festival. Funding Opportunities

‘Harvest Force’ initiative to support a local grain harvest workforce

The State Government has joined with Grain Growers Ltd and Agribusiness Australia to launch the Harvest Force program to help mobilise a local agricultural workforce. The Regional Travel and Accommodation Support Scheme provides eligible applicants access to $40 per day for a maximum of 12 weeks' accommodation, and up to $500 for travel.
 

Indigenous Land Enterprise Infrastructure Fund

This Indigenous Land Enterprise Infrastructure Fund funds the design, supply and/or installation of infrastructure to support relevant primary industry and/or land management activities in remote and very remote Australia. Applications close 8 November 2021.
 

Food Security in Remote Indigenous Communities

The NIAA Food Security Grant supports remote stores experiencing significant barriers to address food security risks in their community. This includes increasing capacity to withstand supply interruptions due to extreme weather, regional supply shortages or transport delays. Applications close 10 November 2021.
