Peter-Allan Finlayson's winemaking at Crystallum has, over the last decade and a half, seen this become one of the most highly regarded wineries in South Africa so it's no surprise that when Peter-Allan took over as winemaker at Gabrielskloof, it was the beginning of something special here, too. Situated on the Bot River in the Overberg region, east of Cape Town, the climate is cool with maritime influences coming from Walker Bay.
Made from old vine Chenin Blanc, the ‘Elodie’ Chenin Blanc is fermented in old French oak barrels, which adds complexity to the wine. The nose offers subtle peach and apricot aromas, coupled with layers of almond and white flowers. The palate is opulent with great natural acidity and freshness, typical of old vine Chenin. It forms part of the 'Landscape Series', which focuses on South Africa’s old vine treasures. Chenin has long been the definitive dry white variety of the Cape and this example sets a high standard.
This up and coming estate is one to get your hands on now, whilst you can. I would expect allocations to become hard to come by in the near future.
ETA 4 weeks.

The acclaimed Peter-Allan Finlayson, whose own label is Crystallum, also makes the Gabriëlskloof wines. This cuvée is an effort to showcase the ‘national treasure’ that is old-vine Chenin, with grapes drawn mainly from Swartland but also Durbanville. Subtle and complex aromas of flowers, herbs, yellow apple, peach and spice, while the palate is dense and detailed and the finish gently savoury. 2021-2030
