Revisit the Age-Friendly Sharing Symposium

On Tuesday, September 28, 2021, Miami-Dade Age Friendly Initiative (AFI) hosted the Age-Friendly Sharing Symposium which featured the City of Miami’s EMPOWER60 Program, and an appearance from our very own Miami-Dade County Mayor, Daniella Levine Cava. EMPOWER60 is a civic participation program designed to provide older adults with strategies to become engaged and work with their local government and communities. The EMPOWER60 program was made possible through an Age-Friendly Mini-Grant.

Mini-Grant Spotlight

The Miami-Dade Age-Friendly Initiative awarded five Age-Friendly Mini-Grants to local organizations to help jump-start age-friendly projects across the county. Check out the featured project this month, by South Florida Seniors in Action!

South Florida Seniors in Action:

The mini-grant allowed South Florida Seniors in Action to provide monthly mini-seminars to discuss transportation issues, mobility, health care, personal care, wellness and nutrition topics affecting seniors in Miami-Dade County. They have presented a total of nine community presentations since February 2021. A total of eleven community food distributions were conducted alongside Farm Share of South Florida.

Funding was used for truck rental and support staff during the food distributions. Light snacks were provided for attendees of the wellness seminars. Over 400 seniors were assisted in applying for the low-income energy assistance program, Medicaid and food stamps. A total of six wellness presentations were also done about the following topics in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Health Department:

  • diabetics
  • loneliness
  • sex education
  • and mental health
A major impact of the mini-grant was the support delivered to older adults, their families and their caregivers as a comprehensive response to the pandemic. During times of isolation and quarantine, older adults need safe access to nutritious food, basic supplies, money, and medicine to support their physical health and social care. Dissemination of accurate information is critical to ensuring that older people have clear messages and resources on how to stay physically and mentally healthy during the pandemic and what to do if they should fall ill.

Get Vaccinated to Protect Yourself from COVID-19

Why Get Vaccinated?
Building defenses against COVID-19 is a team effort. Get vaccinated to protect yourself, your coworkers, your patients, your family, and your community. You are a key part in that defense.

Vaccination is the best path to ending the COVID-19 pandemic, and the CDC recommends that all adults and children ages 5 and older get a COVID-19 vaccine. FDA approval is an important opportunity to reach unvaccinated people with effective messaging that can break through hesitancy and misinformation. Read the press release here.

Become a Host Agency and Get Paid Employees

The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is the nation's oldest program to help low-income, unemployed individuals aged 55+ find work. AARP Foundation first matches eligible older job seekers with local nonprofits and public agencies so they can increase skills and build self-confidence while earning a modest income.

Become a Host Agency Today
The host agency is instrumental and is typically any 501(c)(3) non-profit agency, community-based organization or government agency. By training at a local organization, older job seekers build the skills and behaviors needed to be successful in obtaining a job and keeping it. Also, work-training in a realistic environment provides the opportunity to gain knowledge and feedback that will help SCSEP job seekers be successful in the long-term.

Together, we can offer opportunities that improve employment opportunities to older workers as we expand their service to the community. Learn more at www.aarpfoundation.org/scsep.
