Biotech Startup Marengo Unveils $80M and a New Way to Get T Cells to Fight Cancer

Scientists are trying to advance cancer immunotherapy by developing new ways of getting T cells to target tumors. Some this research still involves removing a patient’s T cells and engineering them, then infusing those cells back into the patient. Marengo Therapeutics is developing drugs that coax immune cells into action without removing or engineering a single one. This week, it unveiled its approach along with $80 million and a lead program being prepared for human testing next year. Marengo is building a library of antibodies. The company plans to add additional programs that engage other types of immune cells, potentially going beyond cancer to address areas such as infectious disease and autoimmune disorders.

Extracting Additional Information from Multi-Frequency Capacitance Scanning

The health of cells during a culture is of interest when discussing the productivity and performance of modern bioprocesses. This presentation will provide an overview of capacitance measurement and then focus on the parameters that can be extracted from capacitance sweeps across multiple frequencies, including a description of the applied Cole-Cole fitting model using the ABER SCADA software. These parameters are affected by the change in the size distribution of cells in culture and indicate key changes in culture performance in real time. This information is applicable across a variety of bioprocessing applications and will ultimately improve our understanding of cell culture dynamics.

Determination of Protein Concentration in Downstream Biomanufacturing Processes by In-Line Index of Refraction

Protein concentration determination is a necessary in-process control for the downstream operations within biomanufacturing. As production transitions from batch mode to an integrated continuous bioprocess paradigm, there is a growing need to move protein concentration quantitation from off-line to in-line analysis. One solution to fulfill this process analytical technology need is an in-line index of refraction (IoR) sensor to measure protein concentration in real time. Here the performance of an IoR sensor is evaluated through a series of experiments to assess linear response, buffer matrix effects, dynamic range, sensor-to-sensor variability, and the limits of detection and quantitation.

A Holistic Approach of Extractables and Leachables Assessment of Rubber Stoppered Glass Vial Systems for Biotechnology Products

Rubber stoppered glass vial systems are widely used as primary containers for storing and delivering therapeutic protein products to patients. Addressing concerns and regulatory expectations related to the risk to biologic drug product quality and patient safety from rubber stoppered glass vial systems requires implementation of an extractable and leachable evaluation program based on material understanding, risk assessment, literature review, and a comprehensive scientifically sound analytical testing methodology. The extractable and leachable study design consisted of twelve drug products filled in twelve different size glass vials capped with laminated and nonlaminated rubber stoppers made from three different rubber formulations.

Sitting More Linked to Increased Feelings of Depression, Anxiety

As people adhered to stay-at-home orders or self-isolated during the early months of the COVID-19 outbreak, daily commutes turned into shuffles between the bedroom and the living room. Clicking Zoom links erased time spent walking to meeting rooms, and Netflix spilled into time otherwise dedicated to the gym. In short, a lot of people suddenly became more sedentary during the onset of the pandemic. Recently published research found people who continued to spend a higher amount of time sitting between April and June 2020 were likely to have higher symptoms of depression. A closer investigation into this association could play a role in helping people improve their mental health.

Optimizing a Biosimilar Production Process

The objective of the research project presented in this webinar was to determine if the three primary methods of production for a typical biosimilar (batch, fed-batch, and perfusion) may be simply and easily executed using a single, benchtop bioprocess control system to allow confident process decisions that are scalable to full production. We compared two perfusion processes. For the fed-batch and perfusion cultivations, we used stirred-tank single-use bioreactors.  This webinar will discuss the outcome of these studies, and will provide an analysis of the benefits of their respective usage in biosimilar production with a particular focus on improving time and cost efficiency..
