The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is being phased out following the Brexit deal in favour of a new, free Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). Here's what you need to know, including what the two cards are, who needs which one and how to get a GHIC for free.  (EHIC and GHIC are FREE via the official NHS website).

For kidney patients this will mean you can continue to access dialysis, or other specialist treatments like oxygen therapy when you travel in the EU using your EHIC. If your EHIC has expired you can apply for a new one, which will be renamed the GHIC, with GHIC standing for ‘Global Healthcare Insurance Card’. As previously, this does not replace the need for you to take out travel insurance but it does mean that the cost of your dialysis will be covered if you dialyse at a public unit (this should also be agreed in advance when booking your holiday dialysis). As before, you may need to make a contribution towards the cost of dialysis because of the unit/country where you were having treatment, but in most cases it will be free of charge to you.

EHICs and GHICs are essentially the same thing – what do they cover?

If you're a UK national living in the UK, the only real difference is in the name:

  • The EHIC entitles you to the same treatment at state-run hospitals and GPs in the EU that locals are entitled to, at the same cost (so in some cases it could be free).
  • The GHIC does the same, but despite being called a 'Global' Health Insurance Card, like the EHIC, it too only works within the EU.

Before Brexit, and during last year's transition period, the EHIC entitled UK holders living in the UK to the above when travelling in the EU. Plus it extended to non-EU countries Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, as well as some other overseas territories. Sadly, neither card is valid outside the EU as of 1 January 2021 if you're a UK citizen living in the UK.

Neither card is a replacement for travel insurance, as they don't cover holiday cancellation, mountain rescue, repatriation and more. Travel insurance should always be taken out to fully cover you.

If I have a valid, in-date EHIC, do I need a GHIC?

Not if you're a UK national living in the UK. If you currently have an EHIC, you can continue to use it in the EU until the card expires, even if that is years away.

How do I check my EHIC expiry?

The expiry date is on the bottom right of the physical card, so check if you've still got time left on yours.

So who needs a GHIC?

If you're a UK national living in the UK, when your EHIC expires or you're applying for the first time, you'll now need to get a free GHIC instead.

How do I get a free GHIC?

You need to go via the official Government website: Apply for a free GHIC via the official website.

The announcement of a continued reciprocal healthcare agreement is much welcomed, and we hope that we can all begin to travel again soon.

Holiday dialysis destinations in the Caribbean

We have some of the best Caribbean destinations on offer - whether it be relaxing in a hammock watching the soothing blue sea or getting up close and personal snorkelling with stingrays and turtles the Caribbean has so much to offer.

Barbados has long been attracting the rich and famous to its glittering shores, but the history and culture of the island will appeal to all visitors. Party the night away in the urban hub of St Lawrence Gap and enjoy a delicious Fish Fry at Oistins, held every Friday and Saturday night.

Or why not head to St Lucia, to hike the legendary Pitons or go on a whale watching excursion; with over 20 species to spot it is a wonderful day out for everyone. There is also the Segway nature trail, which is an ideal way to cruise through the island’s leafy landscape. Take a stroll along Rodney Bay, where there are numerous restaurants, a marina, bars and even a casino.

The beaches of Jamaica will enchant you and lull you to relax and unwind, or if you are looking for something to get your adrenaline pumping then you can enjoy river rafting on Martha Brae, visit the Dunns River Falls which is one of Jamaica’s national treasures and not forgetting the Bob Marley Museum.

The Seychelles’ charm lies in its isolation. The archipelago’s 115 idyllic islands are scattered all over the Indian Ocean. They’re 500 miles from their closest neighbour, Madagascar, and 900 miles from the shores of the African mainland. Thanks to this seclusion, its beaches and forests are virtually untouched and rarely crowded. It’s probably why it’s a favourite with honeymooners, celebs and even royalty!

Cayman Islands escape to pearl white sands and crystal blue water.  Explore a destination home to stunning scenery, prime diving spots, divine greens for golf and smooth charm.  Combine the thriving George Town and Rum Point restaurants and beach bars, with the soft sands and clear enticing waters, as well as a choice of spas, shopping and sports, there is plenty on offer to revel in.

Curacao is still the real deal, wild, natural with extremely friendly people and you can find many amazingly beautiful spots off the beaten track.  Ranked consistently as one of the more affordable Caribbean Islands, with over 35 beaches, and a rich culture and history it is a must visit.

While Mauritius is more commonly known for its pristine white sand beaches and crystal clear waters, its diverse mix of cultures and entertainment makes it an interesting holiday choice. Sample food influenced by the Indians, French and Chinese, visit historic temples and shop in the local markets for a truly authentic experience. And for the aquatic lovers, there's no shortage of beaches to relax on or water sports to try!

Mexico is home to some of the most diverse and unique heritage and culture in the Caribbean, with a wide range of activities on offer in Cancun from swimming with dolphins, to snorkelling in the worlds’ second largest reef and Jetpacking in the turquoise sea. Riviera Maya boasts some of the most historic sites in Mexico, such as Tulum Ruins which is on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Caribbean Sea, dark and winding natural cenotes where you can cool off in deep caverns filled with mineral rich waters or simply enjoy a trip to Chichen Itza to experience ancient Mayan culture. The region is also hugely popular for its stunning beaches, so kick off your shoes and experience Mexico for yourself!

Units in the Caribbean and Mexico are not covered under the EHIC/GHIC card, if you would like more information on the cost per session or the areas we offer please get in touch with us to discuss more via email info@holidaydialysis.co.uk or call 01509815999.
