ASSISTANT PROFESSOR MIHAELA MIHAILOVA'S EDITED VOLUME ON HENRY SELICK'S 2009 STOP-MOTION FILM CORALINE JUST GOT PUBLISHED

Assistant Professor Mihaela Mihailova has just published her edited volume on Henry Selick's 2009 stop-motion film Coraline, titled Coraline: A Closer Look at Studio LAIKA's Stop-Motion Witchcraft as part of Bloomsbury Academic's "Animation: Key Films/Filmmakers" series. This collection brings together an international group of practitioners and scholars to examine Coraline's place in animation history and culture, dissect its politics, and unpack its role in the technological and aesthetic development of its medium. More broadly, it celebrates stop motion as a unique and enduring artform while embracing its capacity to evolve in response to cultural, political, and technological changes, as well as shifting critical and audience demands.

The website for the book is here

She also published two pieces in Journal of Cinema and Media Studies 61.1 (Fall 2021).  Her article titled "Studio Melnitsa's Bogatyr Cycle: Notes on a Global Approach to Contemporary Studio Animation" is dedicated to contemporary Russian studio animation and appears in a special animation-themed In Focus dossier, edited by Ryan Pierson.

She co-wrote (with Cristina Formenti and Timothy Jones) a spotlight article reflecting on the philosophy and activities of the Animated Media Scholarly Interest Group (which she used to co-chair).

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR ELIZABETH RAMIREZ-SOTO TALKS ABOUT UNFINISHED PROJECTS BY WOMEN FILMMAKERS IN 1970s LATIN AMERICA

What can an unfinished film project tell us about women’s filmmaking practices during a revolutionary period? How can we make scattered documents “speak” for historiographical purposes? What stories do these documents tell us about feminist collaborative practices? These are some of the questions that Prof. Ramírez-Soto will address in her talk “Ensayando feminismos: Cineastas mujeres en la Unidad Popular,” in which she will examine an omnibus film that was never made and was to be directed by three women filmmakers during Salvador Allende’s government in Chile (1970-1973).

The conference will take place on Monday, November 22, at 2pm PT. Hosted by the MA in Cinema Studies of the Instituto de Estética at Universidad Católica de Chile. This talk will be in Spanish.

Register here for the talk.

CINEMA ALUM ALFONSO ALVAREZ (MA 93) AT THE ROXIE THEATER

Canyon at The Roxie returns November 23rd with a spotlight on Bay Area filmmaker and expanded cinema artist Alfonso Alvarez (MA Cinema, 1993). Assembling 25 years of multi-projector media-making with live musical accompaniment, this presentation will mark the first indoor screening of work in over two years. In collaboration with media makers Suki O’Kane (sukiokane.com), Steven Dye (dyemark.net), and The Special Musical Guests, Alfonso will present old and new work that spans the use of found footage, optical printing and hand-processing. He and his crew will gather down in the front of the theater and build a small village of projectors and musical instruments for this screening. His crew recognizes that among many factors that have kept us from gathering, the pandemic has had a huge impact on cinema and live performance. Social distancing notwithstanding, the audience is encouraged to come close and gather around the light and sound.
