Internships and industry engagement - is it for me?

There's been a lot of buzz recently about the importance of industry engagement and internships for PhD candidates and maybe you are wondering what it's all about? I mean you're studying to become a researcher and an expert in your field and you are already under time pressure, right? So what would be the point of spending time on something else on top of your research degree?

Well here's what it's all about.
Over the past few decades there has been a big increase globally in the number of students graduating with doctorates and the growth in academic employment has not kept up with this. Universities only employ about half of all research graduates and industry and business, keen to spend more on research and development, are looking for job-ready graduates.  Regardless of where you plan to head in your next career move it will be highly competitive and employers are looking for the diverse and transferable skill set that graduate researchers have. Spending some time working with industry or business will give you the edge that will help you stand out. Some great ways to do this are through internships, mentoring or even volunteering were you get a chance to learn from industry leaders and build a track record of delivering results.
There are a number of ways in which a research internship in industry will benefit you:
  • enhance your career prospects and create potential future recruitment opportunities
  • gain research experience in an industry setting
  • conduct research with industry or community impact
  • strengthen your ability to translate research knowledge into end-use application
  • improve your professional skills while progressing towards project goals and milestones
  • establish and enhance your industry networks.
Australian Postgraduate Research Intern (APR.Intern) is one organisation that connects PhD students with industry through short-term 3-6 month internships. These opportunities empower students to thrive in a practical research environment and for businesses to innovate and be future-ready.
You can find out more about the program through APR.Intern HERE and v
isit the APR.Intern website to see all of the current opportunities available. New internship opportunities are posted every month.

There will also be more opportunities for industry engagement in 2022 through the IMNIS mentoring program so watch this space.
Final PostAc lecture for 2021

So you’re graduating your PhD in a pandemic, what’s next?
Presented by Prof. Inger Mewburn, ANU

29/11/2021 Monday 12:00-1pm https://anu.au1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_cwlCo2IuFViazel

Who? PhD students, post docs, supervisors and policy makers
How long? One hour lecture (40 minutes for the talk / 20 mins for Q&A)
How many? Up to 200 participants on Zoom.

Covid-19 presents a massive disruption to the academic workforce. PhD students and early career researchers are worried about their future career prospects inside academia and confused about their options outside the university walls. In this one-hour lecture we use the team’s research on the post-PhD job market to:
  • Enhance your understanding of the changed academic job market, analysing the effects of hiring freezes and travel restrictions.
  • Increase awareness of career opportunities in industry; which sectors are looking for research talent?
  • Help you approach the non-academic job market with more confidence.
Whilst opportunities in the academic job market post-thesis are getting harder to find that is not the case in the industry, business, and government sector. PostAc is a great place to start the search.
All CSU HDR students have free access to the PostAc platform and the training workshops and support they provide. You can login anytime using your @csu.edu.au email address, set up your profile (see instructions below) and test the platform out.

The IMNIS program is a 12 month mentoring program in which mentees are matched with high level industry leaders in a mentoring relationship. The program also includes professional development and networking opportunities and recruits mentees in the following priority ares:
  • Advanced Manufacturing
  • Agriculture
  • Digital Futures
  • Energy Resources & Renewables
  • Health Technologies
  • Minerals & METS
  • Water Resources
Charles Sturt will be offering places for up to ten Graduate Research candidates and ECRs in a merit-based Expression of Interest (EOI) process in early-2022.
You can find out more about the IMNIS program and its mentors and mentees HERE
Full details and calls for EOI will be released in late-January.
Graduate Researcher Experience Survey

This week all Graduate Research candidates will have received an email inviting them to participate in our annual Graduate Researcher Experience Survey (GRES).

This is our second GRES and the findings from the 2020 survey helped us to plan and develop a range of new initiatives to better support our students.
The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and hearing how we are going from your perspective is important to us.
We are aiming to have responses from at least 30% of our total cohort to give us a really good sample of the diversity of your experiences.

If you haven't received the GRES email and would like to complete the survey please contact Jennifer Podesta.

The survey is open until 10 December.
