🗳️Poll Results: Last week, 75% of readers said "Maybe" they'd attend Maritime High School if they were 13 again and 25% said "Definitely."

1. What is the "maritime workforce"?

Establishing a new maritime high school. Long term staffing shortages on Washington state ferries. Census data showing an aging maritime workforce.

In one month of Future Tides, the trajectory of the maritime workforce is a recurring theme. To better understand the industry's baseline, I dug into some data.

The data above comes from Maritime Blue's Capital Assessment Report, published in 2019. The 2016 data used in the report shows core and non-core maritime industries total employment at 97,916.

The report also found small businesses with less than 50 employees make up an overwhelming majority of Washington state's maritime industry.

Washington state's Employment Security Department historical estimate for all non-farm jobs in 2016 is approx. 3.2 million, making the maritime industry account for 3% of jobs.

Another number: The Washington State Dept. of Commerce estimates the maritime industry employs 69,500 people. Using the figure of 3.2 million jobs, this would mean the maritime industry accounts for 2% of the workforce, larger than the current forestry industry (1.3%) but smaller when compared to aerospace (4%), agriculture and tourism (5% each).

However, future innovation in the maritime industry could result in more occupational overlap between the technology industry (10%) and clean energy (2.8%).
🗳️Poll: How do you like the news roundup below?
It's great! Do this every issue.
I like it. Do it more often but not always.
I didn't find it very valuable or informative.
It's O.K. but I already get that kind of news.

2. On the radar: Foss closure, elections

Here's a brief roundup of maritime-related news with interesting implications for the future.

  • Saltchuk-owned Foss Maritime closed its Seattle shipyard along the Lake Washington Ship Canal which employed 115 people who will be paid through end of the year. See the company statement and Seattle Times coverage. 🤔What will happen to the property next?

  • My GeekWire colleague Lisa Stiffler reported about Brian Footen, a fish biologist turned EarthViews co-founder surveying the shores of Puget Sound by kayak to create a "Street View"-like experience. Read her story. 🤔How else could this survey data be used?

  • Three shipping carriers Maersk, MSC and Zim (yes, same as Zim Kingston) are "temporarily omitting calls in Seattle" due to the port congestion. More details in The Maritime Executive. 🤔The shipping situation may not resolve for some time to come. Will it be permanently altered?

  • Three Port of Seattle Commissioner races will be decided by Seattle's General Election. The commissioners hold four-year terms and there are five in total. According to the unofficial results updated on Nov. 3:
    • Incumbent Ryan Calkins leads Norman Zigler with 73% of the votes.
    • Incumbent Stephanie Bowman leads Hamdi Mohamed with 50.4% of the votes.
    • Toshiko Grace Hasegawa has a narrow lead (275 votes at present) over incumbent Peter Steinbrueck.
Hiya!

Data is a very useful but very tricky thing. Tech is a very data-driven culture. Journalism has becoming increasingly more so through analytics, data science and visualizations.

Still, data isn't the end-all. Raw data can't always answer your question. Collecting and maintaining data can be time intensive and unsustainable. Select data will show one story, but add another metric and it's a different tale.

As I hear about the maritime workforce needs and the "silver tsunami" of upcoming retirees, I wanted to find baseline numbers to provide context as Future Tides follows these stories going forward.

My research started with the questions: "How many people are employed by the maritime industry in Washington state? And what types of employment does that include?"

Aside from the source I cited above, I struggled to find recent data pertinent to these questions. If you know of any, please send it my way.

Tricky or not, I think data is a great tool for context and aim to provide good data and good context through Future Tides.

Until next week,
Cara
