Sustainable fashion trial 

Marks & Spencer (M&S) has launched its first clothing rental trial, on the same day that ASOS published a new interactive guide to help brands and designers reduce waste across the fashion value chain. M&S’s clothing rental trial is being operated as part of a partnership with online, UK-based clothing rental platform Hirestreet. For the trial, there is a focus on dresses, skirts and jumpsuits suitable for the party season, as well as M&S’s more premium leather and wool coats and jackets. Hirestreet’s model involves having shoppers book their rental online, with the clothing then delivered to their address and returned via post. 

In related news, online fashion retailer ASOS has published a 112-page interactive guidebook to help brands and designers adopt circular design principles. The resource is open-source and was developed with input from the London College of Fashion and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. It includes information on incorporating innovative and recycled materials; minimising waste during design and manufacturing; designing upcycled items; improving durability and versatility and designing for recycling and disassembly at the end-of-life stage.

INNOVATION

Growing coral on land

Restoring lost coral reefs and growing more climate-resilient ones is the mission of Coral Vita, a Bahama-based company. Launched in 2019, Coral Vita is the world’s first land-based commercial coral farm and the founders have developed a hi-tech farming solution to grow more resistant, diverse coral and restore reefs around the Bahamas and beyond. They grow 24 different types of indigenous coral, 50 times faster than in the wild, and breed the coral so that it is more resistant to the effects of climate change. In the last 70 years, half of the world’s reefs have been lost and 90% are likely to disappear by 2050. Coral Vita’s innovative approach to coral farming was awarded one of the first-ever Earthshot Prizes for environmental innovation, which were launched by the Royal Foundation and Prince William earlier this year.
