Citizen Science Italia (CSI) National Meeting
On the 11th and 12th of November in Grosseto, Italy, 70 Italian Citizen Science experts from all over the country met to present over 40 projects and to discuss the future of the national CS community, with the aim to reinforce the network and, eventually, create a national CS association. More than 1500 people followed the conference in live streaming and 15 policymakers took part in the Policy Masterclass. The event was hosted by the Maremma Natural History Museum and jointly supported by two H2020 funded initiatives: EU-Citizen.Science and Action

New paper published
Demonstrating the potential of Picture Pile as a citizen science tool for SDG Monitoring may be of interest to some of you. This paper presents the potential of one specific citizen science tool that combines citizen science and Earth Observation approaches for SDG monitoring and impact.

Berlin Science Week
November 9th 1989 commemorates the Fall of the Berlin Wall. Thirty-two years later, as part of the Berlin Science Week, the Falling Walls Summit celebrated Science Breakthroughs of the Year. Citizen Science project “Diamonds on the soles of their feet’ was amongst 20 winners from 189 projects in 80 countries - telling what walls can be broken down through citizen science.

New book published

In the birthplace of the Topothek, in the federal state of Lower Austria, the 200th Topothek of the federal state was opened with the Topotheque of the district capital Mistelbach. More than a third of the Lower Austrian municipalities document their municipality history with the help of local volunteers in our digital archive system, which in this country also has the status of an official state project.

Webinar: Young people in conservation and biodiversity citizen science
Missed our webinar back in September? No worries, we have a recording and a blog post for you to catch up on.

The Citizen Science App 'CoastSnap' is now available in Spanish, Dutch, French and Portuguese
CoastSnap is a global Citizen Science project to capture changing coastlines. With the Citizen Science App - running on the SPOTTERON Platform - users can create timelines of coasts and record their development. Observing and uploading photos of the same location into the App helps researchers to understand how coastlines are changing over time.

The call for abstracts for the Open Innovation in Science Research Conference 2022 is open!
Open Innovation in Science (OIS) research studies the role and value of open and collaborative practices along the entire process of scientific research and its translation into innovation. To join the OIS Research Conference 2022 at CERN IdeaSquare, submit a contribution by January 16, 2022.

Involving citizens in defining research priorities
Are you interested in involving stakeholders outside academia in setting research priorities? Check the scoping review by Christiane Grill from the LBG OIS Center, and its accompanying Priority Setting project database. They provide a comprehensive overview of projects in which researchers have worked together with non-scientific stakeholders to define research priorities.

How do stakeholders view their participation in transdisciplinary research?
Working collaboratively and openly together with stakeholders has become a common phenomenon in research, however the stakeholder perspective on this is yet unknown. A new paper by Raphaela Kaiser and Christiane Grill from the LBG OIS Center reveals the enablers and barriers for such collaborations from the viewpoint of stakeholders and how they perceive such collaboration.

EU-Citizen.Science

The final joint conference of the EU-Citizen.Science and ACTION projects titled “The future of citizen science: sharing experiences from the European community” took place last week. We are very happy that so many members of the citizen science community joined us! In case you missed any talk at the conference, keep your eyes peeled for the ECSA YouTube channel where we will be uploading the recordings soon. In the meantime you can watch the final video of the project here or check out the training modules on the EU-Citizen.Science Moodle platform. The themes range from introduction to citizen science over research design and methods, engagement and impact to communication and regulations and ethics.

COMPAIR
We are happy to announce the launch of the innovation initiative COMPAIR. Harnessing the potential of new digital technologies enables communities to work together to achieve clean air for all. COMPAIR empowers people to become citizen scientists helping them explore what they can do personally to improve air quality and influence urban decision making.
