NEaT November 2021 Newsletter

Dear NEaT members,

The winter is beginning even here in the south of Finland, with some light snow today and a few degrees of frost last night. That means that our traditional Christmas party in Hakaniemi, Helsinki, is coming up again, and you can participate both in person and remotely. We look forward to seeing you there. This newsletter also has useful information about our exciting upcoming events. Enjoy reading it.

The Board of NEaT met on 10 November to discuss future events and general strategy, and will meet again in the new year. If you would like any more information about the work of NEaT, its Board and committees, don’t hesitate to contact me.

NEaT holiday party on Friday, 3 December

Let’s celebrate with food and words! You are invited to a NEaT holiday party on Friday, 3 December to present your creative take on food in our editing slam, participate in a quiz on food in fiction and bring a dish to share inspired by a book or film. Translation contracts

Charlotte Merton and Robin Blanton led an excellent discussion on working as translators and editors in Sweden on Tuesday, 9 November. One of the issues we addressed was contracts. The Translators’ Agreement from 2012 between the Swedish Writers’ Union and a template by the Swedish Publishers’ Association are also available in English. Did you know that SKTL in Finland has a model one (in English here) and the Society of Authors has one for members, as well as more publicly accessible resources for translators and authors?

Tech Tools session postponed

Unfortunately the Tech Tools session planned for 16 November had to be postponed. We apologise for the short notice but it was unavoidable. We promise to reschedule it as soon as possible!

AFinLA 50th Anniversary Symposium, 11–13 November 2021

The Finnish Association for Applied Linguistics (AFinLA) held their annual symposium at the University of Jyväskylä for experts and novices in applied linguistics in Finland and abroad. Celebrating their 50th anniversary this year, the theme of the symposium was “Language, change and society”. NEaT board member Judi Rose held a presentation about the impact of heritage language (non-)literacy on the types of language learning strategies young adolescents use in English reading comprehension. The study she presented is part of her doctoral dissertation about the impact of weak literacy skills on foreign language learning — in this case English. More information about AFinLA here.

English as a Lingua Nordica 2022

NEaT’s biggest annual event is coming up soon. Following last year’s successful collaboration with Nordic Culture Point, we are planning an even more versatile English as a Lingua Nordica seminar for 2022. If you have ideas for speakers, themes, or anything else related to the programme, talk to Julie and Kate at the holiday party or email us at info@nordicedit.fi. We had a lovely working group last year, and we’d be happy to have you join us this year!

ITI Conference 2022

Booking is now open for the Institute of Translation and Interpreting conference in Brighton, 31 May to 1 June 2022. Kate Sotejeff-Wilson is going, hoping to see other members there!

METM22

Mediterranean Editors and Translators Meeting 2022 will be held in Donostia/San Sebastián, Spain, from 13 to 15 October 2022. Since NEaT is a sister association of MET, NEaT members are welcome to attend and usually pay a lower fee for the conference. Early birds benefit the most.
