Science & Writing

Activities

Ideas to Write Home About

Send home some simple science journals for children to use at home related to the topic in the class. Children can later share their journals with the class.

Draw your pet, have a family member help you write your words, document the moon shapes over time, draw a bean plant's progress each week. How can we use scientific journals to document change?

Careful Observation

Science journal writing and drawing is different than creative writing and drawing. Scientists want to accurately represent observations for a purpose.

What can children document using science journals that connects to your curriculum, learning objectives, or standards?

Noting segments of a worm? Capturing changes in a tree on the playground across the year? Documenting the colors of a treasure found on a nature walk?

Tips on emergent writing.
