   Community of Practice Update

From the Central/Western NYS CSTAC:

Our virtual bi-monthly interactive Community of Practice gatherings with education consultant Ali Hearn encourage self-reflection, explore the integration of community schools with an expanded MTSS framework, foster networking, and encourage action planning.

Over 60 participants from school districts and community organizations recently attended our November CoP.  Here is some of what they had to say:

"I loved the balance between small group and large group discussions."

"I appreciated the emphasis on self-reflection, practical strategies, and action planning."

"We discovered new ways to organize what we're doing at each level of intervention."

"I explored the benefits of mapping community partners onto the district’s tiered intervention system for building capacity."

Be sure to register now for upcoming CoP gatherings with Ali Hearn:

  • January 28: Exploring and Strengthening SEL Competencies
  • March 18: Restorative Practices within an Expanded MTSS Framework: Enhancing Whole Child Outcomes
  • May 13: The Evolving Role of SEL Leaders within an Expanded MTSS Framework

Feel free to explore our archived CoP event recordings, tools, and resources from this fall and the '20-'21 school year

Interactive Resource Maps

As New Yorkers continue to face challenges associated with the COVID-19 crisis, connecting our community school leaders with immediate resources is more important than ever. Using these two interactive maps below can help community school personnel find targeted resources within their region to better meet the needs of their students and families.

The NYS Department of Health provides an interactive map of regional food banks for every county in New York. Food insecurity remains one of the greatest hardships facing community school families, and this resource can help school personnel identify the regional food bank that is entrusted with distributing food to local county EMROs (Emergency Food Relief Organizations).

Another major issue facing community school families is supporting their children with disabilities who are preparing to transition out of school during a time of great crisis. The Transition Source Map, provided and maintained by Transition Source, brings together statewide resources for students with disabilities who are preparing to leave school. Their searchable database covers a wide range of agencies that provide assistance in employment, ongoing education, civic engagement, housing, and mental health and wellness.
