Homeless System Cold Weather Response Plan in Effect

Good morning—

The LFUCG Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention has been made aware that overnight temperatures predicted for this evening, November 28th, through and including the morning of Monday, November 29th will be 32 degrees or below. All providers will be responsible for activating their internal policies and procedures as described in the attached plan.

The attached cold weather plan provides a coordinated response for times when extreme cold weather creates additional, immediate need for expanded capacity to assist people experiencing homelessness in Lexington. Extreme temperatures often force people to seek shelter who may not otherwise seek assistance. In some cases, people struggling with mental illness may not seek shelter and require additional intervention for their own safety. This plan ensures Lexington is prepared for these situations.

Shelters have added capacity, but the process to access shelter has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please see the attached detailed plan for specific shelter processes and availability. Lexington providers have made arrangements to welcome all eligible people including former residents under suspension for behavioral or programmatic reasons. Exceptions may include individuals suspended for violence and decisions will be made case by case, but providers and OHPI will collaborate to ensure emergency shelter is available for anyone in need.

Please feel free to share this information.

Best regards,
