FIVE WAYS TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK INTO THE NEW SK CO-OP ACT

Add this topic to your board and management planning sessions!

The Government of Saskatchewan is planning to update and modernize the Saskatchewan Co-operatives Act.

Any Saskatchewan co-operative may provide feedback about the existing Act. SCA encourages ALL Saskatchewan co-operatives to consider what feedback, ideas, and/or changes they would like to see with the Co-op Act.

SCA has assembled five ways for your co-operative to gather and provide feedback. We've posted them at https://sask.coop/learn-about-co-ops/tools-and-publications/the-co-op-act-s.

Watch for a letter from SCA in the next few weeks with more details. For more information on modernizing the Co-operatives Act or providing feedback, contact Victoria Morris, SCA's executive director, at victoria.morris@sask.coop or 306-343-3582.

CDF CANADA ANNUAL APPEAL

Together, we can build a world where self-reliant communities can chart their own future.

The Co-operative Development Foundation of Canada’s annual appeal has a goal to raise at least $45,000. Donations demonstrate a commitment to the cause, which in turn strengthens CDF’s ability to leverage, influence and attract Government of Canada investment in projects that are life-changing to people and communities in developing countries around the world.

Every dollar counts and will enable CDF Canada to have an even greater impact in overcoming the effects of COVID-19 and many other challenges that so many are still facing.

Monthly or one-time donations can be made by cheque,  Visa or MasterCard, and must be received before December 31st of this year to receive an income tax receipt for 2021.

CDF Canada has highlighted six programs that you can review HERE, which demonstrate the value of donor commitments.

CCSC RELEASES PAPER EXAMINING CREDIT UNION GROWTH

"...when we calculate growth over two calendar years, acquiring CUs out-grow their peers."

The Canadian Centre for the Study of Co-operatives (CCSC) has released a new report, “Understanding Growth and its Policy Implications for Canadian Credit Unions”.

In the report, Dr. Abdullah Mamun investigates the sources of growth for the 100 largest Canadian credit unions over the past decade. The paper analyzes what determines growth, and how mergers and economies of scale and scope affect credit union growth.

The report also addresses the current trend towards creating federal credit unions and banking subsidiaries, as well as increasing non-interest income.

SCA MEMBER PROFILE: CANADIAN WORKER CO-OP FEDERATION

CWCF is presenting a free introductory webinar, "What is a Worker Co-op" on December 7th.

The Canadian Worker Co-op Federation (CWCF) represents and promotes the worker co-op movement in Canada and supports the development of new worker co-ops.  The Federation encompasses more than 55 member organizations, plus 70 associate members (most of whom have joined to use the RRSP-TFSA Program), and three Quebec-based regional federations.

CWCF has developed a number of innovative programs and services including a Self-Directed Registered Retirement Savings Plan and Self-Directed Tax-Free Savings Account program, now called the Common Good Capital program, which enables co-operatives and similar types of enterprises, including non-profits, to capitalize their ventures with securities held within Registered Plans.

CWCF just concluded its annual national (virtual) conference and AGM under the theme of “Building Better Together / Mieux construire ensemble”. Learn more about the Canadian Worker Co-op Federation at https://canadianworker.coop

BLOG POST: WE DON’T JUST BUILD HOUSES, WE BUILD CITIZENS

There’s a critical need in the province for affordable, non-profit housing. The value-added of housing co-ops makes it a tantalizing prospect once leaders understand the benefits and differences of co-operative housing.

There are many similarities between non-profit housing and co-operative housing, but they’re definitely not the same thing. Non-profits can provide affordability, says Blair Hamilton, Manager for the Co-operative Housing Federation of Canada’s Prairie Region. A co-op provides residents with affordable housing plus ownership, plus opportunities for personal growth plus a voice in the operations.
