Celebrate with the World

Everyone around the globe will be celebrating GIS-Day today. Before the day gets a little busy depending on where you are, we just thought we should or could share some interesting content we found on the web with you.

A little History Lesson

The first formal GIS-Day took place in 1999. ESRI President and Co-Founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day.
Nader considered GIS-Day a good initiative for people to learn about Geography, and the uses of GIS, and wanted GIS-Day to be a grassroots efforts that was open to everyone.

Want to learn more about the day? Check the official GIS-Day StoryMap by ESRI which outlines all the history and activities since the beginning.

DID YOU KNOW?

ESRI provides all GIS-Day Organizers around the world with 5 ArcGIS for Personal User Licenses.

So that mean’s by attending a GIS-Day event anywhere around the globe, you could just earn yourself a #FREE ArcGIS License which is valid for 12-months.

Check out the event’s around the Globe here to see which one you could attend to stand your chance.

Interesting Hype for the Day

Looking for inspiration on this day? Maybe watching a video might help you better understand how GIS is actually transforming the world.

Here is our favorite video;

Can a Billion Maps Help Save the World?

Can a billion maps help save the planet?

If you are into SDGs, we believe this would be a really good and cool interesting video to watch.

Love Books Instead?

The team from ESRI has also prepared some very nice artistic and ‘mapistic’ E-Books for the GIS Community which anyone can help themselves with.

Navigate to the E-Books section of their GIS-Day website and find an interesting pick for yourself.
