Thoughts from the President
This is the last club meeting of 2021. It has been challenging in a lot of ways. This year has also allowed me to meet so many people across the world. The outreach we can have access to because of new communications (i.e. Zoom) is tremendous. The main challenge locally is to get more involvement from our club members. To that end, I started our 4th Monday Sawdust Sessions via Zoom. It has been a lot of fun just chatting about woodturning and other stuff with a bunch of members. Ron G has kept us up to date on his finish experiment. Glenn B has been sharing his Fordite collection. Kevin has shared some of his new tool acquisitions and I bought some pegboard squares based on what he shared. And Jim M has kept us laughing. I really like these hour long Sawdust Sessions just to keep in touch and learn a thing or two. I hope you have too.
We will have DAW officer and board elections at the club meeting night. The votes will be counted at both in-person and virtual Zoom members. We have not heard of any other members coming forward to challenge existing or nominate for open positions. However, feel free to do so before the elections.

We had a total of 157 dues paid in 2021; so far only 17 families have paid their membership dues for 2022. The membership dues are part of what makes possible having things like having a great audio-visual system, new books, magazines & videos in the library, lathes & support tools for open shop and classes, and bringing in guest presenters and instructors. Also, your membership gives you discounts at our local woodworking stores (Rockler, Woodcraft, and Wood World); these discounts will not be available to you in 2022 until you have paid your 2022 dues to print your new membership card. Also, current membership is required to check any items out of our extensive woodturning library.

Monthly Showcase
November Member Showcase is - Holiday Turnings.
A monthly theme to test out our turning skills, or to simply have fun trying something different.
Each month we will be picking a theme that will be loosely tied to one of our presenters. For November we chose any Holiday Turnings. It can be anything turned as long as it has a holiday connection.
We will have two showcases to choose from. Advanced and Open Showcases.
Advanced is obviously for the more advanced woodturners.
Open is for any skill level. Everyone is able to participate.
Both categories will have prizes to the winner which is chosen by the board at the next board meeting.
To participate simply turn something that fits the monthly theme and go to the forums on our website and post a photo of your turning in the showcase that you are wanting to participate in. One entry person per month. https://dallaswoodturners.com/ |

DAW Library
Our library has nearly 1700 different books, magazines, and videos from more than 450 authors/demonstrators on a wide variety of topics. All the library items are posted on our website by source type, e.g., DAW demos, SWAT, commercial, books, & magazines and also by title, author, and some are by date (DAW demos, SWAT & AAW videos).
Since we are again meeting at Wood World, the library checkout will return to normal; DAW member checkout of up to 5 items from the library during the club meeting and return these items at the following month’s club meeting. If you still don’t feel safe attending large gatherings of people, you can still request items from the library via email to the librarian at mjmontgo1@verizon.net before the club meeting and then coordinate pickup at the librarian’s home in Garland near the Firewheel Mall.
Since the November member creation theme is holiday turnings, here is a list of a few of the items in the library that deal with that topic:

Christmas Party 2021
Hooray, the DAW board has decided to return to a more normal operation. The Annual Christmas party is back!
The event will be held Saturday evening December 4th from 6-10pm at Dos Arroyos restaurant in Richardson. (map from Wood World below)
We have decided to have a slight departure from the buffet style of the past and have a sit down dinner consisting of five different menu items. Tentative menu:
Quesadilla plate - beef, chicken, or cheese
Taco plate - beef or chicken
Taco Salad
Enchilada Plate - beef, chicken, or cheese
Burrito Plate - beef or chicken
(menu is subject to slight changes)
non-alcoholic beverages will be included.
For those that wish, there will be a cash bar available as well.
Besides all your great company we will have raffle items, some silent auction items, and a limited number of live auction items.
Currently, we have commitments from members to donate items into the auction. We have raffle items including a 55” TV, and Tim Yoder’s Elbow hollowing system and many other items from our vendors to entice you to come.
Over the years many of us managed to collect a great array of beautiful wood turnings from some very well know artist’s and at the same time know that the funds raised helped to support the DAW.
If you wish to donate an item into the auction, please contact Kevin Bassett or Chris Cohen and we will arrange pick up of your work.
Get your tickets before Thanksgiving as there is a limited capacity at the restaurant.
Tickets are a bargain at $20 ea. And can be purchased on the web site or in person at the November Meeting.
By now, I trust that most of us are vaccinated against the disease which appears to be on the wane. So, it’s time to open up the 2021 Christmas season at the DAW Christmas Party!
Now! Let’s have some fun and put the dark days of pandemic behind and look forward to a great 2021 holiday season and a better and brighter 2022.

Conversation:
- My great grandfather was the best lumberjack who ever walked the face of the earth.
- Really? Where did he work?
- Well, he definitely made a name for himself working in the Sahara Forest.
- That’s the dumbest thing I ever heard. The Sahara is nothing but miles and miles of desert!!
- Well, sure, now………
