Welcome to November's Blu-ing

Welcome to the November issue of the Blu-ing Newsletter we hope you enjoy reading the content from all contributors.

So what’s news?

Nippers at South Maroubra has proven a real hit with record families joining the club. As it stands now younger age groups are officially closed. Older age groups such as under 12 & 13’s will be considered on a case-by-case basis as they head towards SRC qualifications.

Still on nippers, how fantastic is it to see the number of competitors supported by Coaches and Water Safety during the week at training, thanks so much to those volunteers. In recognition of significant family gatherings during Friday training and on the suggestion of Director of Competition, Shane, we will be opening the club bar for a 'once a month Friday Socials' 5pm to 8pm, promoting family get togethers and perhaps a Friday feed. dates are listed in the Newsletter below.

Club Competition, carnivals and training are all up and running and how great is it to see big numbers in the water, on the sand and in the boats! Sunday Surf swim starts next Sunday, can’t wait to see everybody pop on down and participate in the handicapped fun. Well done to coaches, sweeps and the leadership team for competition.

Strategic Plan for the next 5 years has been completed and will soon be published on our website. The plan allows us to work towards aspirational targets and a roadmap on how to get there, exciting stuff and thanks to former SLSNSW CEO & Life Member Phil Vanny AM for his contribution.

Covid has seen some changes to club operations including only DOUBLE VACINATED members being permitted to enter the club. Proof of vaccinations remains in place with a copy of certificates to be sent to the Vice President Linda (vp@southmaroubrasurfclub.com.au). Once sighted, certificates will be destroyed and members will be listed as approved on an internal secure document. This proof allows members clubhouse access including Friday and Sunday bar service, fob key access if in fact the member has one etc.

Fob keys are the approved method of entering the club. We highly recommend all members purchase one for $20 if they wish to have access to the club 7 days a week. Access to the club is restricted to day light hours with Patrolling Members, General having access to front and beachside entrance doors and male/female changerooms and toilets. Gold Members, Gym Members have additional access into the club gymnasium 6am to 8pm 7 days per week.

We’re looking for your help! Further to the recent email sent to you, we know how well our members and families are connected to sportsmen and women. We are currently asking you to think hard and long about a connection you or a family member, friend might have with a profile current or former sportsperson. NRL, Cricket, Olympian, Commentators, Marathon participants, Ironmen and Women, Paralympians and more are all the targeted speakers! Our sportspersons day provides vital funding for all those competitors wearing club colours at sporting events around the country so if you can help we’d love to hear from you office@southmaroubrasurfclub.com.au

Sunday Socials. With the heat of summer soon to arrive don’t forget our downstairs bar, beer garden and grass area welcomes you, your families and friends. 11am to late afternoon, you’ll find entertainment and an affordable brew or two! Make a date and pop on down, Uber is nice and affordable.

A message from Barry and Lesley our caretakers, please do you bit to look after the club. It could be as simple as keeping toilets clean after use, washing feet of sand before entering, helping to maintain the wonderful new north and south grass areas, washing off equipment after use (and not on the grass), putting garbage in the bins. Barry has said, if its not ok at home then its not ok at your club!

Please keep up to date on all the big issues by joining our South Maroubra Surf Club and Nipper facebook sites plus flick on to our website for more details about your club including room hire for you parties, functions. You won't find a cheaper and better pace to have your special event. For Bernie Kelly room hire enquiries, you’ll find information on our website and by emailing office@southmaroubrasurfclub.com.au

See you soon

Club President

PS ...

A final reminder to all renewing members that membership fees were due before the 30th of October to ensure that you are covered by the SLSA insurance.

Active members who have not renewed will be archived from the system at the end of the month, and are no longer able to patrol.

You can renew online through the SLSA Members Area. In order for the Club to approve your renewal you will need to make sure you complete both the renewal form through the Member Area as well as pay your renewal fees.

More information about renewing and member costs can be found in the Join section of the website. Don’t forget the U18 members fees (including Cadets, Active 15-18 and Nippers) can be partially subsidised by the NSW Active Kids voucher

We are delighted to unveil the newly endorsed club logo.

The logo was chosen to bring together a number of aspects of the club:
  • Recognition of our primary purpose (Surf Life Saving)
  • Recognition of our past (Est 1959)
  • Recognition of our future (competition colours)
The benefit of the new logo is that it can be used by all members for all activities of the club. In particular when considering the new logo we were keen to ensure that all our competition members from the youngest of our Youth, through to the IRB racing, the Boaties and the Masters could all wear the same logo with pride.

We will slowly transition the use of the logo and replace the old one when appropriate.

Special thanks goes to Andy Newrick for the multiple versions of different designs.

Thanks to you all, South Maroubra is now the LARGEST nipper club in AUSTRALIA!
With over 1100 nippers including cadets, congratulations to you all for joining the best club in the east.

October 30th & 31st saw the start of the 2021 nippers’ season at South Maroubra.
The first three weeks have run very smoothly with our nippers heading straight to their zones.

On the 14th November, thanks to some westerly winds, we were blessed with magnificent conditions at South Maroubra with most of our nippers completing their proficiencies.

This year the pre-season preparations have focused on the safety of our members with the Covid pandemic still hanging over us. Split start times, Covid safety plans, QR check in’s, social distancing and hand sanitising are just some of the requirements this season. All the volunteers that help put on nippers each week have been incredible in making all of this happen.

With all of these additional requirements we still need your help. The only people allowed into the zones are those that have a current Bronze Medallion or an Age Manager (AM) award, hold a WWCC number and are double Covid-19 vaccinated. The AM award is available online through the SLS members portal in the eLearning section. Holding this award will provide support to your Age Manager and improve the delivery of the program to the nippers.

Our next Bronze medallion information night will be on 1 February 2022, with the course starting on 22 Feb in the weeks after that running for 7 weeks. In between we have 2 dates to pass the timed swim. You can see information on our Bronze Medallion course here:

We are so thankful to all of our volunteers for running this great program. Nothing makes me happier than seeing our cadets helping out with the younger age groups, volunteering their time to teach others what they have learned.

Check out some of the U8 boys in action, the smile on their faces reminds us why we volunteer.

Don’t forget to stay updated and ‘like’ the South Maroubra SLSC Nippers facebook page.
Keep a look out for ‘60 seconds with Pete’ showcasing some famous faces that are a part of our great club South Maroubra SLSC Nippers.

See you all at the beach.
We are South Bra.
Meal vouchers for the Southend hotel!
Starting next week, we will be giving out $20 Southend hotel meal vouchers to the best and fairest of each age group at Nippers. Dine on a Sunday and kids eat free too! Check out the menu here: https://southend.com.au/

59 members and friends signed up to fill the roster for our inaugural participation in the 24 Hour Row which kicked off at 12 midday Saturday 30 October and concluded at 12 midday Sunday 31 October.

Congratulations and the biggest thank you - you were all amazing. You were the reason this event was a success!  It was fabulous to see so many of our younger members involved. The cross section of members from Life Members to our U14/Cadet and all in between! You collectively rowed 745 kms - that is massive!

We raised $4,446 for Gotcha4Life 24 Hour Row – putting us in the top 12 surf club fundraisers. Our fundraising will assist with the great programs they offer to Engage, Educate, Empower, End Suicide. "Nine people take their life in Australia every day. That is nine too many".

Some highlights during the event included:
  • President Stretch who rowed for an hour – leading by example
  • our marathon super humans Fraser and Jordan - witnessing you both row the marathon was sensational
  • Ben, Marshall and Brodie who did the midnight, 1am and 2am shifts and provided some ‘tunes’ for the few hours prior
  • Life Member Dino’s fruit packs
  • Nick Pavlakis for setting up our live stream
  • Lewis Raymond who rowed for 2hours straight
  • Our ski paddlers 3 am shift
  • 4 am shift roll up of cadets and parents  - so much enthusiasm at that hour
  • Our female participation – and double up of time slots
  • The Sunday Telegraph photographer turning up (despite being at the wrong club)
  • Being joined by Savannah from Gotcha4Life for the last 30 minutes of the event
  • Phil sleeping on the boat shed floor under a tarp
  • Linda being awake the entire 24 hours
  • The park dwellers being moved on early in the evening
  • Life Member Bob Byrne and Keith Disbery – legends of the boaties of our club being involved
  • Sunday morning visit from our Nippers
I could go on as you all deserve a mention. Thank you to our resident caretakers Lesley and Barry for your support and constant checking in on us.

For our first attempt and putting it together within 3 weeks of the event – the Club did good.  We are keen to include the 24 hour row as an annual event on the Surf Club calendar - so watch this space for next years date.!!

We took a fair few videos and photos over the 24 hours which we share with you via the following link.

Once again thanks for your involvement over the weekend, the spirit and vibe was what surf club is all about and it was great to be part of.

Linda Perrin & Phil Stivano
Interviews for the South Maroubra Junior Club Captain’s positions were held prior to the nippers launch date. This season the calibre of applicants and interviews were inspiring and they all did an amazing job in conveying their love of South Maroubra Nippers and surf life saving. The panel deliberated for many hours and it was a very difficult decision in selecting the Junior Captains with very little separating each candidate. Congratulations to Georgie Kiernan & Vectis Buckett for being selected as the 2021/2022 Junior Club Captains.

This year the Selection Committee decided for the first time to trial a Junior Nipper Committee composed of all applicants and led by a Junior Male and Female captain. In addition to the captain roles there will also be some new and exciting leadership roles.
Congratulations to Angus Messiter, Luke Newrick, Jessica Henville, Jasmine Alexiou, Juliette Andersen-Allen & Matilda Saunders for being a part of the Junior Nipper Committee. We can’t wait to see what you bring to this great club.
We look forward to welcoming you back to the Sunday morning club swim. A handicapped race with the weekly winner getting a "Mick's Schnitzel"
On offer will also be a chance to win in the Weekly 100 Squares
