Wales DTP Teams Community

This month, new students completed their DTP Induction, which was delivered entirely online through a wide range of resources.  Thank you to everyone that attended and contributed!  All resources, including recorded sessions, are available within the DTP Student Team.  The Gather Town remains accessible for DTP students of all years to view the virtual gallery and access resources.  During induction, Dr Jenny Mercer, Cardiff Metropolitan University, spoke about wellbeing and ways of actively coping with problems which might arise throughout the PhD.  The Student Team includes links to resources to support PGR health and wellbeing.  If you use or hear of a wellbeing service provided by your institution that is not currently listed on Teams, please let us know so that we can share it with others.

Everyone who participated in this year's induction is invited to provide feedback to help inform future events.

Welsh Government Internship Opportunities

The Wales DTP is pleased to offer 7 internship projects with the Welsh Government. These are open to any ESRC Wales DTP funded student (except those within 3 months of the start or end of their studentship).  It is anticipated that the internships will be conducted remotely, commencing in January 2022, for a period of 3 months full-time or the part-time equivalent. Successful applicants will get an extension of 3 months to their PhD (equivalent to the duration of the internship).  The closing date for applications is noon on 13 December.

Full project descriptions and details on how to apply are available on the Wales DTP website

ESRC Prize for Outstanding Early Career Impact

The Wales DTP extends its warmest congratulations to former DTP Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr Rebecca Windemer, winner of this year's ESRC Prize for Outstanding Early Career Impact.  Watch a video of Rebecca's work on ‘Influencing policy and debate on end-of-life considerations for onshore renewables’.  The runner up in the category was current DTP Postdoctoral Fellow, Dr Emily Marchant, Swansea University, for her work on the project HAPPEN Wales: developing a national-scale primary school health/attainment research network. Congratulations to both on their success!

Interdisciplinary Research Toolkit

There is a multi-media toolkit that is an output from the Shaping Interdisciplinary Practices in Europe (SHAPE-ID) project.  This has been developed with the aim to improve pathways to inter- and transdisciplinary research both within the Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences (AHSS) disciplines but also across AHSS and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines and with societal partners.  The toolkit contains resources including case studies, downloadable discussion guides, “top ten tips” and signposting to extensive third party information about how to conduct successful interdisciplinary research which is tailored for different user groups – researchers, research institutions, research funders and societal partners.

British Library Doctoral Open Days

The British Library is offering a series of free webinars aimed at introducing first-year PhD students to the British Library collections.  The series will explain the practicalities of using the Library and accessing its resources.  The series of interactive webinars will be complemented by pre-recorded content and two practical on-site events enabling students to obtain a Reader Pass and meet fellow students and Library curators.  The first module, 'Getting Started: Researching at the British Library' takes place online on 12 January, followed by weekly webinars until 2 March 2022.  A complete programme and links to register can be found on the British Library website.

Wales DTP Buddy Scheme

The Wales DTP is now seeking student volunteers who would like to take part in a pilot Wales DTP buddy scheme, which will see students placed into a group of 3-4 others who can turn to one another for help and support.  Each group will (ideally) consist of a DTP student from each year of study, and will include students from the same pathway where possible.

To indicate your interest in joining the DTP Buddy Scheme, complete our online form by 12 December.

Wales DTP Student wins Speak Up for Food Security Competition

Wales DTP student Philippa Simmonds (Environmental Planning, University of Gloucestershire) has won this year's Global Food Security Programme annual research storytelling competition, which focussed on how the climate crisis can be tackled through the food system.  Philippa, whose research looks at climate change and livestock, told us 'It was a fun competition which I would definitely recommend to others researching in the food/climate space. It's certainly inspired me to think about different ways of sharing my research in future!'.  A video of Phillipa's work is available here.
