You Better Watch Out, For Scams This Holiday

Scammers earn their place on the Naughty List working year-round trying to trick us into giving out our personal and financial information, but with 2 out of 3 people choosing online holiday shopping, there are more opportunities to fall victim to a scam this holiday season. Be on the lookout for these trending scams:
  • Charity call: impersonator calls with the intention to get your financial information.
    • WARNING SIGN: pressure to make a quick decision to “donate” over the phone.
    • ACTION: take notes about the charity, hang up, and do your own research to ensure it’s a legitimate charity with a secure payment process.
  • Online Shopping: fake websites are created hoping to steal your financial information.
    • WARNING SIGN: the website doesn’t have https. “S” means it’s a secure site.
    • ACTION: shop on a secure website or App, use a credit card or secure payment system such as PayPal.
  • Shipping/Tracking: fake email or text with a link asking to sign into your account.
    • WARNING SIGN: never click a link. Especially from an unknown number or email address.
    • ACTION: go to your secure website or App account to check the package status or find the original confirmation email for the secure tracking number.
It’s important to report scams to prevent scammers from preying on other victims:
  • Report online scams to FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center at IC3.gov
  • Call 2-1-1 for assistance in reporting cybercrime scams
  • File a complaint with the Michigan Attorney General Consumer Protection team at 877-765-8388 or Michigan.gov
  • If you suspect Abuse or Neglect, call the Adult Protective Services hotline at 1-855-444-3911

The holiday season is approaching and for many people that means food, those once-a-year meals, favorite family recipes, and perhaps some over-indulging. But our older adult neighbors or family members may struggle to maintain a healthy diet, holidays or not. Staci Gerken, Contract Administrator and a Registered Dietitian at the Area Agency on Aging of Western Michigan, emphasizes the importance of nutrition for seniors and what to do if you spot a loved one who lacks access to the resources necessary to maintain a healthy diet.
