HMB Airport: A “Touchy” Subject

There has been a recent spike in a longstanding concern mid-Coast: noise from the HMB airport. But there is more to the story than noise, and it’s a complex topic. I offer this article as a starting point for discussion and understanding, and suggest some possible solutions and a process for moving forward. Note that communities who have succeeded in reforming local airports have gotten organized, and have gotten lawyers.  Nothing will change unless there are residents committed to an effort at reform.

Sea Valor Life Ring Buoy Stations Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in Honor of 12 Year Old Arunay Pruthi

The idea for the life-saving stations grew out of the tragic loss of Arunay Pruthi, a 12 year-old boy who was lost while attempting to rescue his younger brother who, while playing on the beach, was knocked off his feet and pulled into the sea by a “sneaker wave”. His little brother was rescued, but Arunay was overtaken by the heavy surf. For approximately fifteen minutes, Arunay’s family and other beachgoers watched helplessly as Arunay attempted to swim back to shore until he finally disappeared below the surface.

Box Truck Ploughs into Vehicles at Rockaway and Highway 1 in Pacifica; 2 in Hospital

PRESS RELEASE. From the City of Pacifica, Pacifica Police Department, Daniel Steidle, Chief of Police on November 9, 2021, regarding the Major Injury Traffic Collision at Rockaway and Highway 1, Pacifica.

Pacifica, CA – On November 9, 2021 at approximately 2:15 PM, officers from the
Pacifica Police Department and North County Fire Authority responded to the area of State Route 1 and Rockaway Beach Avenue on a multi vehicle traffic collision involving a box truck.

A total of five vehicles were involved in this accident. One subject was transported to an area hospital and is in critical condition. A second person was also taken to an area hospital with major injuries.

VOLUNTEERS WANTED. The City of Half Moon Bay approved an MOU (memorandum of understanding) with local Rick Bulan. The City’s Coastal Trail jurisdiction goes from Kelly Ave. south to the Ritz.
 

The new Coastal Trail Bike Patrol is looking for volunteers. Bike Patrollers work as trail ambassadors providing trail directional advice, equipment assistance, safety insights, bike safety programs, assistance with events, first-aid and CPR services, and serve as eyes and ears of the Rangers and other stakeholders on one of the country’s most scenic bike trails.

Recreation Crabbers Are Allowed to Use Hoop Nets and Crab Snares (Loop Traps); NO Crab Metal Traps

PRESS RELEASE. From the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW). Next evaluation of the whale and leather-back turtle population will be November, 20th, 2021.
 

Dungeness Crab. NOTE: The deployment and use of crab traps is temporarily restricted in Fishing Zones 3 and 4, from the Sonoma/Mendocino county line* (38° 46.125 N latitude) to Lopez Point, Monterey County (36° N latitude), until lifted by the CDFW Director.

Recreational take of Dungeness crab by other methods, including hoop nets and crab snares (loop traps), is permitted. Read the new crab trap regulations in effect as of November 1, 2021. Also, be sure to sign up for notifications of in-season gear restriction changes(opens in new tab) on CDFW’s Whale Safe Fisheries web page.

Construction Plans for Proposed Parklet in Front of Fattoria e Mare (Restaurant) & Barrtera (Winery)

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The proposal is for a “parklet” consisting of tables, chairs, boardwalk, barricade, and landscaping of approximately 1,000 square feet within five diagonal vehicle parking spaces on Main Street. The improvements are designed to be modular and removable when needed. The western 45 feet of the proposed parklet is shown as a separate removable section that will be removed upon commencement of future construction of Main Street bridge improvements. Several tables are also shown along the sidewalk. The new parklet has been designed to meet accessibility requirements both within the parklet and along the sidewalk.

The Coastside History Museum in the Jail at 505 Johnston St has reopened  Saturday and Sunday with limited hours (usually 12-2).  Masks are optional for fully vaccinated visitors, otherwise masks are required. As part of Make It Main Street, it will be open from 3 to 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month.

Effective July 1, 2021, the weekly testing at the Ted Adcock Community Center will move to Wednesdays, from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. There will no longer be testing on Monday afternoons.  Details on the new testing service are as follows:

Submit your own content.  Produce free (if you know how) or low-cost content (if you need help), whether via articles (photo-essays), podcasts and/or videos.
Stories are no longer constrained by physical space like newspapers and radio. On Coastside Buzz every story gets its own infinite web page. That means infinite space for a story which can be an article, a podcast, a video, or all three. Tell your story, the way you want to tell it. Come play and help us produce great local content.
