With all the awesome stuff going on in the last few months, I haven’t gotten around to telling you the “Why” in my work.
You know, why I do what I do, what got me started on this journey, where my inspiration comes from, all that good stuff. So here we go...
Magic Exists
I see magic in the world around me. It’s everywhere if you pay attention.
When I first saw Frida Kahlo’s work, with her striking portraits straight out of a dream, I knew that Frida saw this magic too.
This was my introduction to magic-realism.
Magic realism assumes the world we learned about in childhood stories is the real one. It assumes that magic isn’t the opposite of reality, but reality itself.
Frida Kahlo inspires me to shine a spotlight on this real-life magic in my work.
In a similar vein, surrealism introduced me to the idea that art isn’t just a landscape you see. Art is about more than your physical reality.
It’s a window into your mind. And by opening this window, we open up a whole new world. It’s symbolic of how we can manifest our own reality.
With his characteristic exploration of the unconscious mind, Salvador Dahli’s fantastical scenes made him one of the most well-known surrealist artists in history.
Surrealism focuses on the reality of dream worlds. It’s a depiction of the world we enter when we dream. A world where logic doesn’t exist. Who’s to say that this dream world isn’t the real one?
My work is a combination of magic realism and surrealism. I paint my ideas of how magic looks in real life. I will give you a glimpse through the window of my mind.
I blend dream worlds with the magic of the real world, and I hope to inspire you to find the magic in your world.
Bringing It Into Reality
With some insight into why I do what I do, watch me in action below.
On the surface, it looks like countless brushstrokes at hyper speed. But now that the window to my mind is open, you know there’s a whole lot more going on.
My art is a physical manifestation of the magic brewing inside my head. It’s bringing this magic into the physical realm. It’s turning dreamscapes into landscapes on canvas. It’s the literal practice of manifesting my own reality.
