What We're Watching:

Universities Revamp Fundraising Campaigns

As uncertainty and doubt escalated around the COVID-19 pandemic, many universities halted or temporarily paused fundraising campaigns, fearing they might appear disingenuine or find themselves dealing with unforeseeable obstacles. As confidence in a 'post-pandemic' future becomes more prevalent, some universities including Cornell University and Texas State University are deciding that now is an appropriate time for capital campaigns to return.
Considerations Around 'Post-Pandemic' Fundraising Communications:
  • Student success, college access, and research and innovation appear to be common focus areas across emerging campaigns
  • Awareness around challenges facing students has been put in the spotlight as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and fundraising goals messaging will likely be examined through this lens
    • Messaging around athletics department fundraising, particularly for facility upgrades, might prove to be more challenging in this regard as communities push back on misplaced priorities
  • Fundraising through digital channels when physical or in-person options are not available will continue to create new opportunities and challenges
    • With this evolution, the ability to monitor and track progress will only become more crucial
  • Universities that saw significant endowment fund returns in the most recent fiscal year might anticipate the need to educate the community around why a capital campaign is necessary and how funds can/will be allocated
